D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb has a strange set of priorities: last year, he dropped all charges against the white supremacist Oath Keepers and Proud Boys members who participated in the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. But now, he is wasting taxpayer dollars trying to block the mother of Deon Kay from getting a cash payment for her son’s murder by D.C. police in 2020.

In 2020, 18-year-old Deon Kay was murdered by MPD officer Alexander Alvarez in Southeast D.C. Last year, a jury of the D.C. Superior Court ruled in favor of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Kay’s mother and granted the family a cash payment - a ruling Schwalb is now appealing.

Under the U.S. capitalist system, there are two systems of justice: one for the working class and oppressed, and another for the ruling class and its servants. A working-class Black family can be allowed no recompense, but participants in Donald Trump’s coup attempt aren’t worth the smoke for the D.C. District Attorney to prosecute.

We need a new system, one that holds racist police and racist insurrectionists accountable for their crimes - one that stands on the side of Black and working-class families. One that would spare no expense to pursue justice for Deon Kay and all victims of racist police terror.

There’s a crime wave in DC, and its epicenters are the White House and Congress.

Capitalist politicians that make war, rob people of their jobs and benefits for their billionaire backers to be come ever richer – that is the true organized crime wave in the District.

DC IS COLONIZED.

Although D.C. residents pay federal taxes, we do not control how those tax dollars are spent. Every law passed by the D.C. Council may be struck down by Congress.

Because we have very little control over our criminal justice system, US Marshals handle evictions and D.C. prisoners face the onerous burden of long periods hundreds of miles away from the District, which has a significant negative impact on recidivism rates. The District also does not have the ability to levy a commuter tax, which means that, in reality, D.C. runs a structural deficit and is denied crucial tax revenue.

These and other abuses facing D.C. residents make the case for D.C. statehood as urgent as ever. Despite this great urgency, Congress has sought only the most draconian and racist treatment of D.C.

We — as people committed to full and equal representation, self-determination and progress — find ourselves with no option but to build a movement that will raise the call for statehood. Only by building a movement in D.C. the statehood movement can we really begin to envision liberation and equality for the District.

On the one-year mark of Trump’s National Guard deployment to the streets of Washington D.C.,  veterans spoke out and called on active-duty to listen to their conscience and take a stand.

PSL Member and veteran deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan Jason called on those serving to get off of their patrols and join the movement for peace and justice!

Today DC residents rallied against the one-year anniversary of Trump’s federal deployment and national guard occupation of the District.

In the year since, more than 20,000 people across the DMV have been disappeared by ICE, tearing deep holes in the fabric of the D.C. metro area’s diverse society. More than 4,600 National Guard troops can be seen on any given day conducting armed patrols in the streets, parks, and Metro stations across the city, turning the presence of armed soldiers and vehicles into a terrifyingly “normal” sight.

The racist campaign of the far-right has only deepened, expanding to include so-called “teen takeovers.” As Black and brown youth congregate in the streets of gentrified neighborhoods their families once called home, the National Guard has adopted an increasingly active role in social pacification.

Today, the need for D.C. statehood is all the more apparent. Unlike state governors, Mayor Bowser has no authority to order the D.C. National Guard back to its barracks or to prevent the deployment of other states’ Guard units in the city, and Congress has taken free license to trample on more and more D.C. laws each year.

With zero consultation with the affected community, the U.S. State Department is spending $300 million building a new central headquarters for ICE in Congress Heights, a highly oppressed working-class Black neighborhood with a life expectancy 30 years lower than the affluent, majority-white neighborhoods of Upper Northwest. Statehood won’t solve all of D.C.’s problems, but it would give the District’s 700,000 residents new leverage with which to advance the class struggle deriving from and aimed at the root of those issues.

It’s been one year since Donald Trump tried to turn Washington, D.C. into a testing ground for his racist, anti-working class agenda. Join us at the corner of 14th & U this Saturday, August 15, at noon, and demand the National Guard and all federal agents get out of D.C. now!

This crisis has proven not just that statehood for D.C. is necessary in order to protect the autonomy that past generations fought for and won, but it also proves the absolute necessity of ending the capitalist system and the rule of the billionaire class that will never stop in its drive to crush the rights of this Black, working-class city. The occupation of DC is the intended pacification of DC.

They have turned Washington, D.C. into a testing ground for the kind of martial law they want to impose on the entire country. They remember this city’s Black, revolutionary history, and they fear it. Because they know their pro-billionaire political program is deeply hated by the working people of this country. Racist terror against Black and brown communities, demonization and persecution of transgender people, pushing endless costly and destructive wars overseas, tearing up every corporate regulation and every environmental protection, all while privatizing social programs and government assets so that the ultra-rich can get even richer off it.

If we don’t stand up to this program, it will succeed. But if we fight it, if we unite as a class and utilize our power as working people to shut this system down - we can stop it.

Washington, D.C. has been under military occupation for almost a year and it’s NOT going away.

Since August of last year, seeing armed troops marching down the street outside your grocery store, patrolling in the park, and on the Metro has become so regular that it’s almost commonplace. But this is NOT normal and we cannot let it become normal.

It costs taxpayers roughly $3 million a day to have these 4,600 National Guardsmen deployed to D.C., and now Trump intends to keep them here until the year 2029. Even one day was too long, but extending this occupation for years is an appalling attack on democracy and on the people of this city. How many billions of dollars will we waste, how many thousands of families will be torn apart so that Trump can use D.C. as a stage on which to enact his racist fantasies?
