Infantry Regiment, proudly known as ‘The Old Guard’ — the oldest active-duty infantry regiment in the United States Army. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard)

The Old Guard Mission– our purpose – remains constant: Is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, serving our nation since 1784. The Old Guard is the Army's official ceremonial unit and es**rt to the president, and it also provides security for Washington, D.C., in time of national emergency or civil disturbance. The 3rd Infantry soldiers are responsible for conducting military ceremonies at the White House, the Pentagon, national memorials and elsewhere in the nation's capital. In addition, soldiers of “The Old Guard” maintain a 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and provide military funeral es**rts at Arlington National Cemetery. Connect with The Old Guard online:

For more than seven decades, the Presidential Salute Battery has marked our nation's Independence Day with one of the Army's most enduring traditions: the Salute to the Union.

The battery fired its first Independence Day salute on July 4, 1954, one year after it was officially established as a permanent unit within the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). That inaugural salute consisted of 48 rounds, honoring the 48 states that made up the Union at the time. Following the admission of Alaska and Hawaii and the adoption of the 50-star American flag on July 4, 1960, the tradition became the 50-gun salute that continues today.

For 72 years, this time-honored tradition has served as a powerful reminder of our nation's history, the enduring strength of the Union, and the Soldiers who proudly preserve its customs and ceremonies.

Fans had the opportunity to meet Soldiers, explore Army equipment, watch the U.S. Army Drill Team perform and help celebrate 251 years of service, sacrifice and commitment to our Nation. Summer rain could not stop us from celebrating the U.S. Army birthday!

On Sunday, June 14th, the U.S. Army turns 251 years old. Yesterday, soldiers of the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" and the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment The Old Guard) came together to celebrate this milestone with a special Twilight Tattoo held in Conmy Hall on Fort Myer.

Hosted by Secretary of the Army Daniel P. Driscoll, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army General Christopher C. Laneve, and Sgt. Major of the Army Michael R. Weimer, this event included the enlistment of 20 new U.S. Army Soldiers and the commissioning of three new Lt. Colonels into Detachment 201, the Army’s Executive Innovation Corps.

Hosted by Secretary of the Army Daniel P. Driscoll, the event brought together senior Army leaders, including Vice Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Christopher C. LaNeve, Sergeant Major of the Army Michael R. Weimer and Command Sgt. Maj. Vern B. Daley Jr., while highlighting the readiness, discipline and commitment that have defined America’s Army for 251 years. 🫡🇺🇸🥳

A special Twilight Tattoo held in conjunction with the Army’s 251st Birthday celebration brought Soldiers, Families, veterans and community members together at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Virginia.

Hosted by U.S. Army Sec. Daniel P. Driscoll, the event featured Soldiers from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and musicians from The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” as they showcased the Army’s history through ceremonial drill, music and historical reenactments. The performance also included the commissioning of members of Detachment 201, also known as the Executive Innovation Corps, and an enlistment ceremony for future Soldiers.

Senior Army leaders in attendance included Gen. Christopher C. LaNeve, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, and Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael R. Weimer. Together, the events highlighted the Army’s continued commitment to honoring its history while investing in the next generation of Soldiers and leaders.

The Army’s 251st Birthday Twilight Tattoo featured two significant milestones for the future of the force: the commissioning of members of Detachment 201, also known as the Executive Innovation Corps, and an enlistment ceremony welcoming future Soldiers into the United States Army.

U.S. Army Sec. Daniel P. Driscoll commissioned members of Detachment 201, while Gen. Christopher C. LaNeve, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, administered the oath of enlistment to future Soldiers. The ceremonies highlighted the Army’s continued investment in both innovation and the next generation of military leaders and Soldiers.
