Last week, the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited the Kingdom of the Netherlands, where he attended the World Championship for Akhal-Teke Horses and the Akhal-Teke Horse Beauty Competition at the Peelbergen Equestrian Centre in Kronenberg.

Addressing an open meeting of the International Association of Akhal-Teke Horse Breeding, Hero-Arkadag emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the world-renowned Akhal-Teke breed and strengthening international cooperation in horse breeding, equestrian sports and scientific research.

The program also featured an awards ceremony, cultural exhibitions and performances by Turkmen artists and the “Galkynyş” National Equestrian Games Group.

On July 17–18, 2026, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in the United States, together with the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, organized a series of events in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area marking the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s Independence and the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence.

In addition to the roundtable on Turkmenistan–U.S. Partnership, the program included a cultural exhibition, a friendly chess tournament, and a soccer match.

The exhibition featured Turkmen decorative and applied arts, traditional attire, books, publications, and other exhibits presenting the country’s rich national heritage.

A friendly chess tournament was also held with the participation of representatives of the diplomatic and academic communities, members of the Turkmen diaspora, and friends of Turkmenistan. The first-, second-, and third-place winners received medals, certificates, and commemorative gifts.

On July 18, the program continued with a friendly soccer match. Following the match, participants were presented with commemorative gifts.

The events were held in a warm and friendly atmosphere and contributed to strengthening people-to-people contacts, promoting Turkmenistan’s cultural heritage, and further developing friendship between Turkmenistan and the United States.

On July 17, 2026, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in the United States, together with the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, organized a roundtable entitled “Turkmenistan–United States Partnership: Celebrating Independence, Friendship, and a Shared Future.”

The event was dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s Independence and the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence.

Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the United States Esen Aydogdyyev and Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations Vepa Hajyyev highlighted the steady development of bilateral relations, cooperation in international and multilateral formats, and prospects for expanding political, economic, educational, cultural, and humanitarian ties.

Addressing the roundtable from the U.S. side, Mark Cameron, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central Asia at the U.S. Department of State, and Ambassador Matthew S. Klimow, former U.S. Ambassador to Turkmenistan, positively assessed the current momentum of Turkmenistan–U.S. relations and emphasized the considerable potential for further cooperation.

The roundtable brought together representatives of the U.S. Department of State, academic and analytical institutions, business circles, friends of Turkmenistan, and members of the Turkmen diaspora.

National Leader of the Turkmen People Meets with U.S. Senator Steve Daines

On 9 July 2026, the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with U.S. Senator Steve Daines of Montana, member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

During the meeting, the sides discussed the development of Turkmenistan–U.S. cooperation in political, diplomatic, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres.

Special attention was paid to expanding business ties, cooperation in energy, transport and communications, as well as the implementation of the TAPI gas pipeline project.

The parties also exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in science, education, culture and sports, reaffirming their mutual interest in further developing constructive dialogue between Turkmenistan and the United States.

On 9 July 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, held a meeting with the United States Senator from the State of Montana, Steve Daines.

During the meeting, the parties discussed current issues of bilateral cooperation, as well as prospects for further expanding collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

The interlocutors expressed satisfaction with the consistent nature of the political and diplomatic dialogue between Turkmenistan and the United States, emphasizing the importance of maintaining regular contacts at various levels. In this context, they particularly noted the significance of high-level visits, which have given additional impetus to the development of bilateral cooperation and the strengthening of constructive interstate dialogue.

The parties also paid special attention to the further development of interparliamentary cooperation as an effective mechanism for strengthening mutual understanding and expanding bilateral partnership.

Particular attention was devoted to trade and economic cooperation. The parties discussed prospects for cooperation in the energy sector, as well as opportunities to enhance collaboration in trade, investment, transport and logistics. In this regard, the important role of the Turkmenistan–U.S. Business Council in expanding mutually beneficial ties between the business communities of the two countries was emphasized.

On June 17, 2026, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Washington, D.C. welcomed a group of Turkmen students returning home after successfully completing the 2025–2026 FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) program year at U.S. high schools.

Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the United States Esen Aydogdyyev congratulated the students on successfully completing the program, wished them continued academic success, and emphasized the important role of educational exchanges in strengthening mutual understanding, friendship, and people-to-people ties between Turkmenistan and the United States.

During the meeting, Counselor of the Embassy Meret Orazov delivered a presentation dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence and the designation of 2026 as the Year of “Independent Neutral Turkmenistan – the Homeland of Purposeful Winged Horses.”

The presentation also highlighted the current state of Turkmenistan–U.S. relations, recent high-level contacts, cooperation within the C5+1 format, and the Embassy’s activities aimed at promoting political, economic, educational, and cultural ties between the two countries.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of views with the FLEX participants.

On June 8, 2026, the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan hosted a meeting between Deputy Minister of Education of Turkmenistan Azat Atayev and a delegation from the United States led by Sarah Rogers.

The parties discussed ways to further strengthen Turkmen-American cooperation in education, with a focus on expanding inter-university ties, academic mobility, language training, digital technologies, and the preparation of specialists for modern sectors of the economy.

Special attention was paid to joint master’s programs, including MBA initiatives, dual-degree models, curriculum development, faculty training, international accreditation, artificial intelligence technologies, and the use of leading digital educational platforms.

The sides also discussed current exchange programs, opportunities to increase participation of Turkmen students, and stronger engagement with alumni networks.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties agreed to update the joint cooperation Roadmap, reflecting new priorities in education, innovation, digital ecosystems and university partnerships.

The meeting reaffirmed the mutual commitment of Turkmenistan and the United States to strengthening educational cooperation and training highly qualified professionals for the future.
