For one day last week, Lake Superior gave thousands of people a rare gift — then took it back.

Well… just like that, it’s over.

The winds from the storm did what Lake Superior so often does — the ice shelves have broken apart and the caves are no longer safely accessible. Seeing how quickly it changed really drives home why the Park Service has such strict conditions before allowing people out there.

That stretch of shoreline rarely stays stable for long. Even when the ice looks thick enough, it can shift fast once the winds come in. Not even 12–24 hours can make the difference between safe access and open water.

Which makes Monday feel even more special.

We didn’t know it at the time, but we were lucky to ne there that one day. Thousands of us walked that frozen shoreline while it held, and now it’s already gone.

Lake Superior gave us a brief opening… and I’m so grateful we stepped into it.

I was there today and shot tons of pics. They cancelled tomorrow, so glad I walked 7 miles in 7 hours along the ice caves with my dear friend Teri. We complained about a sore back, knees and ankles, but worth every pic! I’ll share them over the next few weeks. Hope some of you got the one and probably only chance to go this year.

The site to pay the $5 fee for tomorrow isn’t working. They say they’ll have a person at Meyers beach to collect it. So Disappointing!

Honestly, this is going to be chaos. I’m not sure they can shuttle all the people by shuttle bus from their 250 possible parking spots for the thousands of people that have usually showed up.

READ this MAP for details. You must take the shuttle and can’t park at Meyers beach road, see maps, you can take shuttle from Corny too. $5 fee to enter Meyers Beach.
