Hey deer hunters, remember that there are kiosks available to submit your deer to be tested for chronic wasting disease (CWD).

We're especially interested in samples from the CWD sampling priority areas, but hunters anywhere in Wisconsin can submit a sample from their deer for CWD testing. Testing kiosks have been positioned throughout the state and the testing is free for deer harvested within the state.

Hunters have four different ways to submit a sample from their harvested deer for CWD testing:

– We add self-service kiosk locations throughout the season, with many added ahead of the nine-day gun deer season.

– Hunters can visit cooperating meat processors, taxidermists and other business owners for assistance in the sampling process.

– Hunters can extract the retropharyngeal lymph nodes themselves at home or in the field for CWD testing. Samples can then be dropped off at a CWD kiosk.

– Hunters can also arrange an appointment with DNR staff via the Wildlife Switchboard by calling 608-267-0866 or emailing [email protected], but please note the availability of these appointments may be limited.

Some shots of our department staff on a recent survey for a wetland restoration project in the Fish Creek Watershed, which is a priority watershed for the department. Wetland Restoration projects not only provide habitat for migratory waterfowl, shore birds, and other wildlife but also slow the flow of runoff on the landscape. Fish Creek is a priority watershed for the department, so if you have any potential projects reach out to us for a site visit.

Thanks to all the hunters who took advantage of the CWD Prevention Program by utilizing the deer carcass dumpsters! 3 of them were completey maxed out as you can see in the pics 👍👍

Bayfield County has NOT had a positive case of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) since the DNR began sampling for the disease in Wisconsin back in 1999, and to date is still CWD free. The past 5 deer seasons, local municipalities and sporting groups have helped Bayfield County in the campaign to keep CWD at bay, funding and placing multiple carcass disposal dumpsters in the greater Bayfield County area. Nearly 45 tons of waste has been safely disposed of from these 5 past seasons, so the word is out there that hunters care about keeping northern WI CWD free. This season, 5 dumpsters will be placed throughout the area in the following locations:
• Timberghost Taxidermy – Iron River WI
• US HWY 2 and Hnath Rd (5 miles west of Ashland) – Ken & Dale Excavating, Inc – Ashland WI
• PJ’s Cabin Store – Barnes WI
• Bayfield County Garage - Grandview WI (new location behind Choppers)
• Ashland WIDNR Service Center – Ashland WI
Dumpsters will be placed at these locations the second week of November, and available for use into the second week of December. CWD testing will also be available at the following:
• Ashland DNR Service Center
• Washburn DNR Ranger Station
• Timberghost Taxidermy in Iron River
• Mellen DNR Ranger Station
• Brule DNR Field Station
It’s free and easy, and instructions and materials will be at each kiosk.
There are several municipalities, businesses, and sporting groups that have made financial contributions to this program; THANK YOU for your help!
