Knowing the signs of an opioid overdose can help save a life.
If someone won’t wake up, is breathing slowly or not at all, has pinpoint pupils, or is making choking, gurgling, or unusual snoring sounds, they may be experiencing an overdose.

If you suspect an opioid overdose:
📞 Call 911 immediately
💊 Give naloxone (Narcan®) if available
⏱️ Give another dose after 2–3 minutes if the person does not respond
❤️ Stay with them until emergency help arrives
Naloxone can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose. You don’t have to be a medical professional to carry it or use it.

Recognize the signs. Carry naloxone. Be prepared to respond.

Open and honest conversations about alcohol and other drugs can help youth feel supported, make informed decisions, and know they have a trusted adult to turn to.

💬 Start the conversation early
👂 Listen without judgment
🧠 Talk about healthy ways to handle stress and peer pressure
🤝 Remind them that asking for help is always okay

Whether you’re just getting back into the school routine or you’re already a few weeks in and still settling in, our Prevention Team would like to wish everyone a wonderful start to the new school year!

One of the most rewarding parts of working with Friday Night Live (FNL) is building meaningful relationships with students and supporting them as they grow into confident leaders and advocates for their communities.

Seeing Joel Ruiz's journey has been especially inspiring. Joel began as a student leader in the Friday Night Live chapter at BHS, where he quickly demonstrated a passion for leadership and service. His dedication led him to continue his journey with the California Youth Council (C*C), where he has continued to make a positive impact.

Now a college senior, Joel remains actively involved with C*C, using his voice and leadership to support not only our local community but communities across California. Watching him continue to grow, lead, and inspire others is a reminder of the lasting impact youth leadership programs can have.

Our Prevention Team proudly attended the Friday Night Live Leadership Training Institute (LTI) 2026, where we learned, collaborated, and gained new ideas to strengthen prevention efforts and empower youth in our communities. We’re excited to bring these strategies back to our local chapters and can't wait to kick off the 2026–2027 school year with fresh ideas, new opportunities, and innovative approaches to support and inspire our youth. Here's to another year of leadership, prevention, and positive impact!
