Today, we pause to remember our brother, Sheriff Wayne Potter, on the first anniversary of his passing.

One year ago, our office, our county, and our law enforcement family lost a steady hand, a courageous leader, and a true friend. Sheriff Potter wore the badge with honor. He believed in service before self, standing firm for what was right, and taking care of his people and his community without hesitation.

Under the leadership of Sheriff Rick Hamby, the men and women of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office continue to carry that legacy forward — committed to integrity, accountability, and protecting the citizens we are sworn to serve. Wayne wasn’t just a Sheriff. He was our brother. His impact is still felt in our halls, in our patrol cars, and in the hearts of those who had the privilege to serve alongside him.

We ask our community to join us today in remembering his life, his sacrifice, and the example he set. We honor him not only in words, but in the work we do every single day.

Gone, but never forgotten.
End of Watch — Always remembered.

One Year Later…

It’s hard to believe it has been one year since Sheriff Wayne Potter left us.

In that year, our community has felt the weight of his absence — at events, in times of crisis, in quiet conversations around town. Sheriff Potter wasn’t just a badge. He was a steady presence. A familiar voice. A neighbor who cared deeply about Morgan County and the people who call it home.

He served with strength, but also with heart. He faced challenges with courage, but never forgot compassion. Whether responding to emergencies, supporting his deputies, or simply stopping to talk with someone in need, he carried the responsibility of leadership with humility and dedication.

Cancer may have taken him from us, but it did not take his legacy.

Today we remember the man behind the uniform — a husband, a father, a friend, and a public servant who gave so much to this community.

Morgan County has always been strongest when we stand together. And in remembering Sheriff Potter, we’re reminded of the values that bind us: service, sacrifice, and love for our home.

Gone, but never forgotten.
Forever a part of Morgan County.

We thank Sheriff Rick Hamby for guiding the ship with a steady hand Wayne would very proud of the impossible job you are doing in carrying on his legacy while simultaneously forging your own path.

A Message from Above....

Son, as you mark this milestone 18th birthday, I want you to know that my love for you has only grown stronger with each passing day from up here watching you. I'm so proud of the person you're becoming - your heart, your values, and your optimism. I miss you and I know you miss me. Just remember I've never felt better and we will have a great reunion one day. Though I'm not physically there to celebrate with you, I'm there and know that my spirit will always be with you. Don't ever hesitate to reach out to those who love you for guidance, support, and love. You're capable of achieving anything and being anything you set your mind to. Never lose faith in yourself. I love you more than words can express. Your family loves you. Happy birthday, my son.

Love,
Dad

Happy 18th birthday, Little Wayne Potter! Today marks a major milestone in your life, and we're honored to celebrate with you. In your dad's absence we were honored to stand in the gap to mark the occasion as your brothers and sisters, to show you love and support. You've grown into an amazing young man, and we're so proud of the person you're becoming. We were thankful to have the opportunity to join you and your friends at Wartburg Central High School to celebrate this early special day with you!

“A Host of Heroes”

When Wartburg football player, Wayne Potter, took the field for senior night, he was accompanied by his family. However, his father, the late Sheriff Wayne Potter, was there in spirit and in the hearts of everyone in attendance after his battle with pancreatic cancer came to an end earlier this year.

That’s when a host of heroes stepped in to be there for Wayne on this special day. Friends & Coworkers, subordinates, and deputies from all over the region came to ensure Wayne knew he was loved by his father so much and just how proud of him, he would be.

What a special moment and memory for him.
