👉Listen, this is important. Wildfires are a no-drone zone for good reason.👈

🚨Flying a drone near or over a wildfire is ILLEGAL. Don’t do it.
🚨Firefighting aircraft that respond to wildfires fly low in support of ground personnel. Drones can pose a serious threat to pilot and public safety. A drone that disrupts air operations also puts firefighters, residents and property at risk of loss to wildfire.

Oftentimes, media outlets, other first responders and private landowners deploy drones near or over wildfires. It isn’t ok. It’s dangerous … until it’s deadly. Don't do it.

On Jan. 9, a DJI drone collided with a Super Scooper actively fighting the Pacific Palisades Fire in Los Angeles. While no one was harmed, the collision grounded the aircraft at a time when it was needed most.

Today, March 2, a drone was seen in airspace above two wildfires in eastern NC. If a drone is there, firefighting aircraft can’t be.

👉Remember, wildfires are a no-drone zone for good reason.👈

Congratulations to our local Forest Ranger!

Congratulations to Jim Short for being recognized as the NCDA&CS Feb. 2024 employee of the month. Jim serves as the NCFS Warren County ranger, having transferred into the position from his previous role as the Halifax County ranger, a role he held for 20 years. Due to ongoing vacancies, Jim is working day in and day out to ensure landowners in both counties have a county ranger to assist them with protecting and managing their forests. Jim’s NCFS District 5 coworkers “look up to him as an honest, hardworking person who is the best example of a great leader and true asset to the N.C. Forest Service.”

New Year’s Eve - Rain and thunderstorms likely before 9pm, then a slight chance of rain between 9pm and 10pm. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Areas of dense fog after 9pm.

Fog, particularly when dense, can be hazardous to drivers. Fog contributes to numerous travel accidents every year.

If you must drive in foggy conditions, keep the following safety tips in mind:
• Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.

• Make your vehicle visible to others both ahead of you and behind you by using your low-beam headlights since this means your taillights will also be on. Use fog lights if you have them.

• Never use your high-beam lights. Using high beam lights causes glare, making it more difficult for you to see what’s ahead of you on the road.

• Leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to account for sudden stops or changes in the traffic pattern.

• To ensure you are staying in the proper lane, follow the lines on the road with your eyes.

Have a Safe New Year!
