With Fauquier County schools back in session, we thought it a perfect time to reflect back on some historic schools around Warrenton during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. From the anthropological view, schools are more than just places of education; schools are where our most formative daily rituals are developed, a fulcrum around which identity and community are established from an early age. Only a handful of these buildings remain standing today- which do you remember?

📷Photo 1- The circa 1825 house at 28 Smith Street operated as Captain Ball's Academy for boys through the 1830s.
📷Photo 2- The circa 1830 Odd Fellow's Building at 109 Main Street operated as Miss Harriet Swift's School for Young Ladies in the 1840s-1850s.
📷Photo 3- The Fauquier Female Institute for girls on Lee Street operated from circa 1857 until 1923.
📷Photo 4- The circa 1871 Richard Henry Lee Lodge Building on South Third Street served as a Freedmen's Bureau School in the 1870s and later the Colored Odd Fellows Hall & School from the 1880s-1910s.

Several variations of Warrenton High School were constructed in the early twentieth century
📷Photo 5- the second High School was constructed at High Street and Academy Hill Road in 1909;
📷Photo 6- the third building was constructed "down the hill" in 1921;
📷Photo 7- and the fourth High School (now Taylor Middle School) was built on Waterloo Street in 1936.

Two new private schools opened in town in 1912:
📷Photo 8- the Warrenton Country School for girls (1912-1948) on lower Culpeper Street; and
📷Photo 9- the Stuyvesant School for boys (1912-1954) on Wi******er Street, where St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and School now stand.

📷Photo 10- In 1918, Sears & Roebuck president Julius Rosenwald constructed one of his Rosenwald Schools for African American children on Shirley Avenue. The Rosenwald Foundation constructed more than 5,000 schools across the south by the 1930s including 381 in Virginia and 8 in Fauquier County alone. The Warrenton Rosenwald School was once the largest public school in the county until it was replaced by William C. Taylor in the 1950s.

TRAFFIC ALERT for Main Street Project:

🚧Concrete work at the corner of Main Street and Alexandria Pike. This will require flagging operations.
📍Friday, September 11th: the concrete contractor is scheduled to arrive at approximately 4:00 PM to begin demolition of the area.
📍Saturday, September 12th: the contractor will pour the concrete during the day.
📍Monday, September 14th and Tuesday, September 15th: the contractor will be installing the brick along the border during the day.

🚧Milling and Paving Operations on Main Street
This work will be conducted from 7 PM to 5 AM each day beginning Monday, September 14th until the morning of Friday, September 18th. During the time of the work, parking will not be permitted on Main Street, and the roadway will be closed from Alexandria Pike to Fifth Street. When the contractor concludes each day at 5 AM, all access points along Main Street will be reopened.

‼ TRAFFIC ALERT: VDOT plans to camera the existing drainage structures and pipes along portions of Broadview Avenue as part of the early planning phase for the upcoming roundabout project in 2030.

Here is the schedule of dates and areas where lane closures will be installed to accomplish this work. No lane closure will begin before 9 AM, and all lane closures will be picked up prior to 3:30 PM.

📍Wednesday, September 9th:
Right turn lane closure at Blackwell Road (Southbound).

📍Thursday, September 10th:
Left turn lane closure at Wi******er Street (Southbound).

📍Friday, September 11th:
Left turn lane closure at Wi******er Street (Southbound) and Route 211.

📍Monday, September 14th:
Flagging operations on Wi******er Street (Southbound).
Right turn closure on Wi******er Street (Northbound at Route 211).

📍Tuesday, September 15th:
Right turn lane closure at Route 211 Eastbound at Blackwell Park Lane.
Right turn closure at Route 211 at Business 211 Southbound.

📍Wednesday, September 16th
Right lane closure at Route 211 Business (Northbound at Route 211).

No Circuit Rider service on Labor Day and will resume on Tuesday, September 8th.

-Road closures include Main Street from Court Street to Sixth Street, Falmouth Street at E. Lee Intersection, Culpeper Street at E. Lee Street, and Hotel Street at Ashby Street.
