Remain safe this summer at the pool and around other bodies of water with these safety tips!

🏊 Always swim with a buddy: No one should swim alone. This includes kids and adults.

πŸ‘€ Designate a Water Watcher: When kids are in the water, one adult should be actively watching at all times. This means phone down, eyes up.

🦺 Life jackets save lives. On open water, boats, docks, and unfamiliar areas, wear one.

🚫 Know your limits. Lakes and rivers have currents, drop-offs, and conditions that pools don't. When in doubt, stay out.

πŸ“ž Know when to call for help. If someone is in distress, call 911 immediately. Don't wait.

πŸ›‘ Stop your scroll and take a few minutes to learn about the importance of knowing CPR. CPR & AED Awareness Week just wrapped up and two stories involving Warrenton Volunteer Fire Company members highlight the importance of learning CPR.

Lieutenant Tom Litchford was recently traveling in New Smyrna Beach, FL when he and a Volusia County Sheriff's Deputy pulled an unresponsive woman to shore. They performed CPR as a 2-person team and were able to help her breathe again. They both stayed with her until paramedics arrived and she's now expected to make a full recovery.

Additionally at a First Friday event, WVFC crews performed CPR to save a life. First to arrive on scene were AIC David Achter, Pat Koglin, Joe Saffer, Walter Faryniarz, and Tim O'Neil. This is another scenario where hands-only CPR was used.

If you've been thinking about learning CPR, there is no time like the present. Two upcoming classes are available right here in Fauquier County, offered in partnership with the Piedmont Medic One Foundation and we’ll be offering one soon as well!

πŸš’πŸ”₯ Member Spotlight: Patrick Edwards πŸš’πŸ”₯ Patrick recently shared his story with us and if it resonates with you, we'd love to have you join us too!

"My motivation to join Warrenton Volunteer Fire Company started around April of 2025 because I wanted to stay engaged with the culture and work that comes with being in the Fire service after high school.

The members of WVFC have truly been the most helpful and supportive individuals in assisting me with achieving my goals. Over the summer, I took an EMT course at Laurel Ridge Community College. By the end of the summer, I had become a nationally certified EMT.

Upon being released as an IDLH member in November, I made it my mission to move forward with my goal of becoming a Firefighter and knowing where I can go from here. For the friends that l've made and the things that I've learned at WVFC, the sky is the limit."

We look forward to continuing to watch you grow, Patrick!πŸŽ‰
