We at Warrenton Honest Government League have read Carter Nevill's letter of indignation from this weekend.

Despite his protests to the contrary, the mayor's office is not merely ceremonial, it is a position of real leadership and responsibility (as other of our mayors have demonstrated).

Four years ago Carter ran on a platform of providing strong leadership. We voted for him, and some of us wrote checks to his campaign.

Last month, he told Fauquier Times that he has led as a Chinese master, 'not speaking, but acting, and in a way so that the citizens would not notice'. This is the description of a manipulative leader, and it is his own apt description of himself.

That is NOT what we voted for.

Now that his leadership has brought us nearly over the cliff, he tells Fauquier Now that he is only a figurehead and says "the Council did it".

Mayor Nevill also hides behind the town staff (which has kept things from the town council itself) and withholds his correspondence under "executive privilege" from those making Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests relative to the Amazon data center and annexation of land.

Those with nothing to hide, hide nothing.

We support Renard this time. Mayor Nevill and he share one thing: "a bold optimism" for Warrenton.

But Renard's is that we can remain a charming Piedmont town and not become the suburb Carter Nevill has in mind. Carter has said, echoing the past town manager: "we grow or we die". Well, without thoughtful planning, that is more a description of how cancer spreads than a future for Warrenton.

Renard offers a very different future, and we hope he will have your vote today.

WHGL is a brand new civic organization just created by a group of concerned Warrenton citizens. We were formed by distinguished Town leaders in order to support and encourage local elected officials and candidates for office to adhere to the highest standards of integrity in their service; and to promote those whom actively advance openness, transparency, and ethical conduct, while opposing those who do not.

This political committee is still in formation, but the following are already among the community leaders who have subscribed, with others still joining:
