What waits patiently in the grass, hoping to catch a free ride to your armpit, latches on undiscovered until you look for it, and can pass on a plethora of illnesses?
A tick. And Missouri is home to nine species of them.
Tick season came early and hit hard in Missouri this year. Here is what they are carrying:

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Ehrlichiosis
Tularemia
Heartland Virus
Bourbon Virus
Lyme or Lyme-like Disease
Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness
Alpha-gal Syndrome

You've seen plenty of tick posts. You know what to do. Don't let something smaller than the tip of your finger make you seriously sick.

Good Morning! It is going to be a pretty warm and sunny day out today and a perfect day to test the monthly outdoor sirens. These sirens are designed to be heard outside, so if you haven’t had a chance to step outside yet, keep an ear out around 10 a.m. for them.
Afterwards, let us know where you were and whether or not you heard them. This information lets us know whether a siren is working or not.

Here's your time to shine with this week's Trivia Tuesday:

You head to grandma's house on a 100 degree day for some of her famous sweet tea. When you arrive, all the windows and doors are closed, the A/C is turned off, the ceiling fans are running in the hot house, and grandma is wearing long pants, a sweatshirt, thick socks, fuzzy slippers, and a bathrobe on top of everything. What is going on?

A. Grandma knew you were coming and wanted to create an environment that would ensure it's a short visit.

B. That's just grandma being grandma. No one knows why she does the things she does.

C. Grandma is just cold natured, always has been, nothing to worry about.

D. As we age our bodies lose the ability to accurately sense temperature. Grandma may be in serious danger without feeling hot at all.

Check back this afternoon for the answer!

It starts at 70 degrees outside but inside the temperature climbs fast. Too fast. The air stops moving. Every surface becomes a burn waiting to happen. The smell is overwhelming, trapped, suffocating. There is no shade. There is no breeze. There is no way out.

It's the inside of your car. Parked out in the sun right now. It can hit 120 degrees inside in about 90 minutes.

What if someone accidentally left you in there? Check for kids and pets. Please.

May has been a heavy one for weather in Missouri. We've talked about flood terminology, lightning, hail, tornadoes, and the storms that have shaped our state's history. Some of you have felt these storms personally. Some of you have lived through them.

As we close out the month, JOCOMO EMA is hoping for one thing for June: sunshine.

Sunny days. Quiet skies. Front porches without storm watches. Backyard barbecues without one eye on the radar. Kids running through sprinklers instead of running for the basement.

We'll be back in June with content on summer safety, pet preparedness, and how to enjoy a Missouri summer without ending up in an ER. But for today, we're just wishing you blue skies ahead.

Take care of yourselves and each other. See you in June!

We'll see you all at the parade tonight! Look for EMA and some of our CERT volunteers along the parade route.
