Last night’s training was all about hydrants and hose work. We brought out the ladder truck to practice aerial operations. We worked on dressing the hydrant, which means setting up a hydrant for use by adding gate valves. With the hydrant as our water source, we then relay pumped water from truck to truck. These are necessary skills for fighting fires in our area and it’s important to practice them to keep us sharp and ready to go on our next call. Thank you to John Forristall, Retired Captain at the Boston Fire Department, Special Operations Division Technical Rescue, for the insightful training yesterday about the use of thermal imaging cameras to assist with fighting fires. The Warren Vol. Fire Department received an award for fire scene preservation from the Vermont International Association of Arson Investigators at their two-day conference this week. A few of our members were there for the training and to accept the award. The trainings were incredibly helpful and allowed our firefighters to learn more about recovering data from fire or water damaged electronics and fatal fire investigations.

Lithium-ion batteries are used to supply power to many devices today, but if they are not used correctly they can catch on fire or explode, so making sure they are used safely is critical!

Safety tips include -

*Always follow manufacturer instructions
*Only use the battery for the device it was intended for
*Only use the certified charging cord that came with the device
*Keep the battery at room temperature
*Do not overcharge the batteries
*Be careful where you store and charge devices. Store them away from anything that can catch fire!
*Stop using the battery if you notice an odor, change in color, too much heat, change in shape, leaking, or odd noises

These batteries can be dangerous so please exercise caution to avoid a fire in your home, and be sure to recycle them at a safe battery recycling location!
