Something terrible has just happened!! You need help and you need it fast. Frantically you fumble for your phone. You try to hold it together but this is just really bad, it might even be the worst day of your life.

You take a deep breath and dial 911.

A calm voice answers…. “911, what’s your emergency”….

You immediately loose it! You’re talking fast. Barely able to breathe. You’re not thinking straight, not even sure you’re getting the words out.

The voice that answered has the training, experience, and unique talent to stop you, calm you, and help you.

Before the lights and sirens ever roll out, your journey to the other side of this awful day, this worst moment, begins, and it begins with something as simple a voice… that voice from a person you can’t see, that voice from a person you’ve never meet and may never meet, that voice that’s sends help your way and fast!

That voice is a 911 dispatcher.

24 hours a day, 7 days a week

From every panicked, upset, hurting voice, thank you for answering the call.

When Warren County was pounded by storms Sunday night, the county opened its emergency shelter at Three Star Mall to give residents a safe place to stay.

There were 33 people who took advantage of the emergency shelter, which was open from 8 p.m. Sunday till about 2:30 a.m. Monday morning.

“The storms weren’t expected to hit until around 10 p.m., but we wanted to open it up early to give people a chance to arrive, so they weren’t getting here in driving rain,” said county EMA director Jason Hillis. “We would have stayed open all night, but the storm passed and people were leaving so we closed at 2:30 a.m.”

Seven children were among the 33 in attendance.

The emergency shelter is located inside the Senior Center at the mall. Anyone who feels threatened by incoming weather is welcome to utilize the emergency shelter. It opens when the National Weather Service determines there is a substantial threat to our area.

This is its second year of operation.

“Last year, we had some people who were camping at the state park take advantage of the shelter,” said Hillis. “It can be anyone. We had a lady and her two kids use it. They had their home destroyed by the tornado in Readyville a few years back and they live here now. They are terrified of storms. The most we’ve had at one time is 52.”

The county has purchased enough blankets and pillows to accommodate 100. There are 75 cots with plans to purchase 25 more.

“This is a nice place,” said Hillis. “We have TVs in here and plenty of bathrooms. There’s a kitchen."

The shelter is open during weather emergencies. To be notified by text message when severe weather is approaching, and when the shelter is operational, register at:
