Notification of Walk Off of Maine Department of Corrections Resident in Machias

The Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) announced that at approximately 12:00 a.m. on July 6, 2023, Down East Correctional Facility resident James Berube walked away from his assigned work site at Maine Wild in Machias. Berube, who is serving a 12-year sentence for kidnapping, burglary, theft, arson and eluding an officer with all but five years suspended, was working at Maine Wild.

Berube is described as 72 inches in height, 180 pounds, blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing Blue Jeans, a Black and Blue hooded sweatshirt and a denim Jacket. MDOC Law Enforcement personnel are on scene working with State Police and the Washington County Sherriff’s Office attempting to locate Berube.

The Maine Department of Corrections is seeking assistance from the public regarding his whereabouts. If you encounter Berube, please do not confront him. To share any information, please contact the Maine Department of Corrections.
