AFRICAN ACHIEVERS BANQUET
African Achievers banquet to honor founder, members
WARREN — One of the original founders of the Trumbull County African-American Achievers Hall of Fame will be recognized for his service at the 32nd annual banquet set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Diveste Banquet Rooms.
Bob Davis, president of the Trumbull County African-American Achievers Association, said Jimmie L. “Jimmye” Ware, who was a lifelong member and one of the organizers of the annual banquet, died last September at age 70.
”Jimmie was a hard-working member of the African-American Achiever’s Association,” Davis said. “He and Van Nelson were founders of the group. We will remember all he has done for the organization.
”This year’s banquet’s theme — ‘Reflect on the Past. Vision to the Future’ — will allow us the opportunity to look back and reflect on all that has been done in the past 32 years,” Davis said.
Those inducted into the Hall of Fame are local African-Americans who have made a positive impact on the local community in terms of leadership, community service or development, entrepreneurship, education, artistic talent, sports and more.
Scheduled to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year are Pastor Kent Barnes, Eddie Colbert, Coralee Fowlis, Pastor Charles Daniels, Kenya Roberts-Howard, Gloria Rogers and Franklin Parker. Parker also is one of the organizers of the annual banquet.
”This event allows to honor a great group of people from all walks of life,” Davis said.
Keynote speaker will be Bradley Sellers, mayor of Warrensville Heights. Sellers spent more than a dozen years as a professional basketball player, both in the NBA — including on the Chicago Bulls alongside NBA Hall-of-Famers Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen — and overseas. He was first elected mayor of his native Warrensville Heights in 2011 and was re-elected in 2015.
Also during the banquet, a presentation of scholarships will be made to Elijah Burch and Courtnai Richardson, both Warren G. Harding High School seniors. Davis said education is a key for future success for upcoming generations.
Proceeds from the banquet help with the scholarships and also the annual African-American Achievers Festival held the first weekend in June in downtown Warren.
