The faces changed, but the bond never did.

In May 1966, four young Marines fresh out of boot camp posed together on a beach in Oceanside, California, just weeks before they were deployed to Vietnam. The photo captured the innocence and camaraderie of youth, a moment of levity before the horrors of war. They had trained together at Camp Pendleton, and all of them knew what was coming.

The four men—Bob Falk, Dennis Puleo, Tom Hanks, and Bob DeVenezia—were in the same weapons platoon, and once they arrived in Vietnam, they were split up. Two of them earned Purple Hearts; DeVenezia took a bullet to the shoulder, and Puleo was given last rites after being hit by shrapnel. They all survived, but after the war, they went their separate ways, scattered across the country, and lost touch for nearly 45 years.

It was not until 2011 that Hanks created an online memorial for a fallen comrade and Falk stumbled across it, which eventually led to the four men reconnecting. The reunion took 50 years to happen, but on April 23, 2016, they met again, this time on Cinnamon Beach in Florida. Their mission was to recreate the iconic photo they had taken half a century earlier.

They brought a surfboard for the photo, found clothes that matched the original, and recreated the exact same pose—Hanks in the back center, Puleo on the left, Falk on the right, and DeVenezia crouching in the front. The result was a side-by-side comparison that showed not just the passage of time, but the resilience of a bond forged in war. "It was one of the best days in my life," Hanks said. DeVenezia added, "It was like nothing had changed even though 50 years had passed."

Four hundred men landed in a clearing. Two thousand enemy soldiers were waiting. Hal Moore told his men they would not be left behind.

It was November 14, 1965, in the Ia Drang Valley. Moore was 43 years old, a lieutenant colonel commanding 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry. Helicopters dropped his troops into Landing Zone X Ray. Within minutes, heavy fire tore through the grass and trees.

They were outnumbered nearly five to one.

Moore moved across the battlefield under constant gunfire. He called in air strikes close to his own lines. He reorganized shattered platoons. He helped carry wounded soldiers to safety. For three days and two nights, his battalion absorbed wave after wave of attacks.

Seventy nine of his men were killed. More than 120 were wounded.

Before the battle, Moore made a promise. He would be the first to step onto the field and the last to leave. When helicopters finally evacuated the survivors, he walked the battlefield one last time to make sure no one was left behind.

He received the Distinguished Service Cross. The Medal of Honor came 31 years later, in 1996.

He died in 2017 at 94.

Ia Drang became a book. Then a film. But for the families of the 79, the valley never ended.

Four hundred landed. Most came home because he refused to break.

Happy 83rd Birthday, Gary Burghoff! 🎂

There are characters you watch…
And then there are characters you feel.

Gary Burghoff gave us one of the most unforgettable hearts in television history as Radar O’Reilly on M*A*S*H.

He wasn’t the loudest in the room.
He wasn’t the toughest.

But somehow… he was the one everyone leaned on.

Radar could hear helicopters before anyone else.

He could finish your sentence before you said it.

And without ever asking for credit…
he kept the entire 4077th running.

But what made Radar truly special?

It wasn’t just the humor.

It was the innocence.

In the middle of war, chaos, and heartbreak…
Radar reminded everyone what they were fighting to protect.

When Gary Burghoff left the show…

You could feel the shift.

Because Radar wasn’t just a character.

He was the soul of something pure in a very complicated world.

Even today, decades later…
fans still smile the moment they see him holding that teddy bear.

Because some performances don’t age.

They stay with you.

Here’s to 83 years of a man who gave us one of the most human characters ever put on screen.

10 years ago we held our first annual tribute to the veterans who served in that far away place called Viet Nam. 10 YEARS! We gather again this Saturday, April 25th for a parade, salmon, laughs and tears.

We’ve lost many since 2016, but we still honor their memory. Join us in Warm Springs, OR…
