Quabbin Reservoir

Quabbin Reservoir Quabbin Reservoir - "The meeting of many waters. When it was "built" in the 1930's, it was the large Terry. August 26th, 1919-May 5th, 2005. Lots of it. bike.

The Quabbin page is for everyone's enjoyment and to teach people the importance of such a beautiful place., to respect it and keep it clean so that many future generations may enjoy it and learn of it's important history.I have created this site on the Quabbin Reservoir in honor of and in memory of my beloved father and mentor, Lewis B. The Terry family of Massachusetts had several relatives who w

ere residents of the Quabbin and had to give up their homes, businesses and land so that the city of Boston could have a clean drinking supply of water. My mother and father Lewis B. Terry and Doris Terry have brought my four siblings and myself as well as many grandchildren to the Quabbin. Mother made many a picnic lunch for she and my Dad to spend many a day there. My Dad related many stories of the Quabbin's early years to us (stories of before it was flooded.) We all have heard these stories many times and never tired of hearing him tell them. We now pass those stories on to our own children and grandchildren. Some of our relatives that lived there were Otis Hager, a storekeeper and postmaster in North Dana and Asa "Popcorn" Snow (quite an unusual man) and Walter Terry, a minister What a sacrifice those people made giving up their homes, livelihood and lifestyle there.. Today it is free for anyone to enjoy but there are areas where no one is allowed to go. I personally have enjoyed the Quabbin and its beauty with my father since I was a small child. I was taught early on to respect nature and to leave no footsteps behind. My husband and I used to enjoy exploring the Reservoir on our Mt. bikes and now are unable to do so because of more restrictions imposed on the average citizen. We never left anything behind yet we always carried a bag with us to carry out any trash we found that was already there. Mostly they were cigarette butts (you are not supposed to smoke in the Quabbin and dog p**p. Dogs are also not supposed to be allowed in the quabbin yet every time we go there, there are dogs. They leave more impact on the environment than earth friendly tires from mt. bikes I am a dog lover, but it is the dogs owners who do not pick up after their dogs that spoil it for others, so please clean up after yourselves and any dog you do bring in. Thank you for your help. In all our years of riding in there we have NEVER, ever seen a track from a mt. I urge all of you who enjoy the Quabbin to write your senators for re-opening the Quabbin to recreational mt. bike riding. I have never seen anyone with a bike scrubbing out or endangering the trails in any way. Also, did you know that you cannot swear in the Quabbin? Another rule not taken seriously. We give billions of gallons of water to the city of Boston and other towns and I believe we should be able to enjoy the quabbin more and ALL it's beauty. If you agree lel your politicians know. Thank you
I would also like to thank all the workers who help to keep the Quabbin Reservoir so clean and the people who work in the visitor's center. They are quite knowledgeable about the history of the Quabbin and it's people, so be sure to stop by and say hello and to thank them. A good job deserves to be recognized. I say thank you to the M.D.C, and all the people there.

The Quabbin Reservoirs' main gate is off of Route 9 in Belchertown. If you are coming from the east it will be on your right. Follow the road straight in and you will see the Visitor's Center. Be sure to go in and you can ask questions and see photographs of before the Quabbin was flooded, what life was like back then and get lots of information on the area itself. The MDC is very helpful and have a vast knowledge of this beautiful area. You can view charts on how many eagles have been sighted and the population of moose and deer as well. Enjoy your visit and remember to keep the area as clean and prisitine as when you found it. If you want some great reading material on this area, J.R. Greene of Athol has written many books on the Quabbin. Some are on sale at the visitor's station and many are also on sale at Brookfield Orchards in North Brookfield which is open year round. Thank you for taking the time to vist my site. I love this are as my father is a descendant of North Dana and told me many stories of the towns. He passed in 2005 and my mother in 2015. I have dedicated this site to them.

Hello, I just want to thank everyone for their messages and nice posts and contributed pictures. As soon as my husband recuperates from knee replacement surgery, I will get back up there and take some more pictures. Meanwhile, I am working on writing a story passed on to me from my father. A descendant from N. Dana. Thank you all and think spring!

In the warmer weather if you walk to Dana Common, be sure to take notice of the wonderful signs and picture a girl scout named Kaley placed there to earn her Gold Award. She is a descendant of the Cooley family and worked very hard to help bring Dana Common alive the way it was before the Quabbin Reservoir. The past history just amazes me to this day. Thank you to J.R. Greene, people like Kayley, the M.D.C. we can all enjoy the Quabbin that much more. Please, always respect this place of beauty.
