HOW FAST DOES A FIRE ENGINE RUN OUT OF WATER?
(1.5”–1.75” attack line)

Fire engines do not have unlimited water.
Tank water is for initial attack—it buys time.

Not all fire engines carry the same amount of water—and it can run out in just minutes.

Water duration depends on tank size and flow rate (GPM).
More flow = less time.

SMALL FIRE ENGINE (300–660 gallons)
Flow: 95–150 GPM
Duration: 2–5 minutes

Nozzle: Fog / Combination
Nozzle Pressure: ~100 psi

Quick attack—but runs dry fast.

STANDARD FIRE ENGINE (~1,000 gallons)
Flow: 150–250 GPM (per hose)

Duration:
• 1 line: 4–8 minutes
• 2 lines: 2–4 minutes

Nozzle Options:
• Fog (100 psi)
• Smooth bore (50 psi)

More hose lines = faster water loss.

WATER TANKER (2,000–3,000 gallons)
Flow: 125–250 GPM
Duration: 10–20+ minutes

Supports fire engines and helps maintain continuous operations.

REAL NUMBERS

Typical Flow (125–150 GPM):
• 500 gallons = 3–4 minutes
• 1,000 gallons = 6–8 minutes
• 1,500 gallons = 9–12 minutes

High Flow (250+ GPM):
• 500 gallons = ~2 minutes
• 1,000 gallons = ~4 minutes
• 1,500 gallons = ~6 minutes

Higher flow means faster tank depletion.

NOZZLE BASICS

Fog Nozzle
• 95–150 GPM
• 100 psi
• Effective for cooling

Smooth Bore
• 160–265 GPM
• 50 psi
• Better pe*******on and more efficient water delivery

WHAT DRAINS WATER FAST

• Larger nozzles (higher GPM)
• Multiple hose lines operating
• Continuous, uncontrolled flow
• Poor water discipline

TO SUSTAIN OPERATIONS

• Connect to hydrants
• Use water tankers
• Control the flow

Water management is fire control.
