The following description was written by Sara Bristol and printed in the Seattle Times in 2010:
“Built in 1910, the colonial revival-style mansion was the home of William Perry Sawyer, an influential merchant who served in the Legislature from 1892-95 and played a key role in building Yakima’s streetcar system as well as the Masonic Temple.
Since 1969, Fred and Pat Erickson have been careful stewards of Sawyer’s home, which they purchased from his youngest daughter.
For their preservation work, the Ericksons last Tuesday were among 13 recipients statewide to receive one of the State Historic Preservation Officer’s 2010 Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation in Olympia.
Sawyer called his 220-acre property Elmwood Farm for the elms, planted in 1912, that now tower over the house.
The home’s exterior is rock on the main level — lava rock to diffuse heat on the three sides that receive direct sunlight and insulating river stones on the north — while the upper levels are wood, capped by a hipped roof.
The home has 10 bedrooms, each plumbed for a sink, though not all were installed.
