Reminder: It’s Back to School time

As students return to school we would like to remind everyone to drive carefully and watch for children. Motorists should allow extra room around School Buses and anticipate frequent stops.

Remember, if you see a stopped School Bus with red lights flashing NYS Law states that you MUST stop when travelling in either direction and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing the roadway.

A few important safety reminders:

• Slow down in school zones (or avoid them, if possible) – especially at the start and end of the school day. Traffic is usually heavier at these times as parents discharge and pick up their children.
• ONLY use drop designated drop off and pick up areas.
• Allow extra time, especially during inclement weather.
• Anticipate children’s actions – when children begin a new school year, they are often excited and distracted and sometimes do unsafe things such as run out between parked cars. Anticipation on the driver’s part can avoid an accident.
• Carpool, if possible, to reduce the number of cars traveling to and from school.
• Watch for increased bicycle traffic in and around schools.
• Avoid distractions while driving – do not text or use cell phones while driving and keep your eyes on the road at all times.
• Talk to your children that either walk or ride their bikes to school and remind them to use caution and avoid distractions as well.

Now is also a good time to remind your children to obey all school crossing guards and follow all safety guidelines when travelling to and from school, including the use of sidewalks and crosswalks.

At approximately 9:45 am on Friday August 28, 2026 the Wantagh Fire Department responded to a report of a garbage truck on fire at 1132 Wantagh Avenue in Wantagh. Chief of Department Bill Stevens was first to arrive and reported that the contents of a Town of Hempstead Sanitation Truck caught fire and were being dumped out of the truck in the parking lot. Engine 2 arrived, followed by Engines 7, 8 and 4, and Rescue 2 and the Safety Officer.
Firefighters stretched 3 hose lines to extinguish the burning pile of trash on the ground as well as the residual contents that remained in the truck. All fire was knocked down quickly, while overhaul continued for a while as firefighters, assisted by a Town of Hempstead bucket loader, pulled the smoldering garbage apart so everything could be hosed down with water. All operations were completed in approximately 40 minutes and there were no injuries reported.

At approximately 6:00 pm on Friday August 21, 2026 the Wantagh Fire Department responded to a single car collision southbound on the Wantagh Parkway between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road in Wantagh. Chief of Department William Stevens was in command, along by First Assistant Chief Paul Krussmann, as Squad 1 and Rescue 3 responded along with the EMS Captain and Safety Officer. Medics from Rescue 3 evaluated the occupant of the vehicle, who was then transported to an area hospital while Firefighters from Squad 1 checked the vehicle for any hazards. All units were secure in approximately 30 minutes and there were no injuries reported.

During the week of July 20 through 24th, several young people from the Wantagh FD Exploring program joined with approximately 50 of their peers from various Fire Department Exploring and Junior Firefighting groups throughout Nassau County to attend “Camp Fahrenheit 516.” Started in 2015 as a joint venture between the leadership of the Nassau County Fire Service Academy and the Board of Officers of the Nassau County Junior Firefighter Association, Camp Fahrenheit 516 is a weeklong training opportunity held each year in July for future firefighters to receive classroom and hands-on training in various firefighting and rescue tactics.
​Wantagh Explorer Post 690 was first chartered in 1999 with the purpose of giving teens, aged 14-18, the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge and experience in firefighting, rescue and EMS skills with the goal of encouraging young people to join the ranks of the Wantagh Fire Department upon reaching age 18. Many have not only joined the ranks of the Department, but have also served in many leadership positions including Chief of Department. Additionally, many have also gone on to serve in careers in the Fire Department, EMS and Law Enforcement professions.

First Assistant Chief Paul Krussmann was on hand Friday July 24th as 3 members from Wantagh Explorer Post 690 graduated. Congratulations and well done to Explorers Tim Hunter, Anthony Krussmann and Victoria Kurz!

The Chiefs Office, Board of Fire Commissioners and officers and members of Engine 5 regret to announce the passing of 55-year member, Ex-Captain William Wills, badge #1003.

A Veteran of the US Air Force, Bill joined the Wantagh FD in September of 1970 and was assigned to Engine 5. He served as Lieutenant in 1976 through 78 before being elected as Captain in 1978 and served in that role for 2 years. He remained an active member for many years and was frequently found driving Engine 5.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

May he rest in peace.

At approximately 12:40 pm on Wednesday July 8, 2026 the Wantagh Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on the westbound Southern State Parkway between Route 135 and Wantagh Avenue. Third Assistant Chief Rich Mongiello was first to arrive and found the vehicle fully involved.

Engine 694 was first to arrive and they were joined by Engines 2 and 7, as well as the Safety Officer and District EMS. Water and foam were applied to extinguish the blaze, which was hampered by the fact that the gas tank ruptured and spilled approximately 15 gallons of gasoline on the ground.

There were no injuries reported and all units were secure a short time later.

With continued high temperatures and smoke from the Canadian wildfires, an Air Quality Alert has been extended for our area until at least 12:00 tonight.

The alert, issued yesterday, was raised to “unhealthy,” and potentially dangerous for vulnerable people including young children, the elderly and those with breathing conditions such as asthma, COPD or heart disease.

If possible, limit time spent outside to early morning hours and short periods of time to reduce exposure and avoid performing strenuous activity outdoors. Remain inside as much as possible, use air conditioners to filter air and keep windows closed.
