This past Memorial Day, members of the Marine Unit were underway during the first drone show at Jones Beach State Park. M-31 was staffed with a full crew including firefighters, ALS provider, a diver/rescue swimmer, as well as new members in training. We worked alongside with Underwater Recovery Team (URT) marine unit. Fortunately the night did not result in any marine incidents and everyone enjoyed a great night.

Last night at approximately 21:30hrs the Wantagh Fire Department was alerted for a building fire in treasure island marina in Seaford Harbor. Lands units arrived on scene to find a fully involved restaurant with extension to multiple boats on fire. This prompted chiefs on scene to request our marine unit along with marine units from Merrick Truck Co. 1 and Freeport Fire Department to responded to the scene. Marine 31 got underway and while responding was advised of two boats adrift that were burning. Marine 31 arrived and immediately started fire fighting operations to extinguish the burning boats. Once the drifting boats were put out our crew made their way to the scene to provide additional water side fire suppression and safety for the crews operating. The crew of Marine 31 operated for 3 hours before returning to the dock.

On Wednesday, July 17th, members of the Marine Unit took M-31 over to John J Burns Park to meet with Chiefs and members, as well as the .of.oyster.bay Bay Constables. Regular familiarization drills are beneficial and help maintain strong mutual aid relationships with various fire departments and other local port partners. Today Marine 31 under went its yearly pump test performed by . Performing this test at the beginning of each season is crucial to making sure the pump is performing to manufacturers specifications. Additionally the test makes sure the pump hasn’t suffered any damage throughout the previous season. With the pump passing with flying colors, the pump and boat are ready for whatever fire emergencies may come its way this season.

On Friday, October 27th, at approximately 0922 hours, the Wantagh Fire Department marine unit, Marine 31, was requested for a report of a boat fire. The initial assignment was sent to the USCG, NCPD, and Merrick Fire Department. The reported incident was on a fishing boat located at Hempstead Reef, which is located approximately 3.3 nautical miles south of Jones Beach State Park. The Wantagh Fire Department sent a Chief Officer to the Merrick FD shore side command post located at the beach front at Jones Beach. Marine 31 responded with a crew and met port partners from Station Jones Beach RBM 45 and Marine 5. The vessel had a small electrical fire onboard that was extinguished with no reported injuries. Station Jones Beach RBM 45 towed the vessel in with the assistance of NCPD Marine 5. All fire department operations were under the command of Merrick Assistant Chief 6401 and Wantagh Assistant Chief 6901.

At approximately 7:45 pm on Monday August 21, 2023 the Wantagh Fire Department Marine Unit responded to a report that 2 females aboard a Jet Ski were missing for approximately 2 hours in the vicinity of field 10 at Jones Beach State Park. With information gathered from on scene units via the reporting source, the crew began their search. The Marine 31 crew located the missing Jet Skiers within 15 minutes of arriving in the area and reported that they were not injured but that they had run out of fuel. The females were taken aboard Marine 31 and the Jet Ski was towed back to shore, where the young ladies were reunited with family. In addition to Marine 31 the Chiefs, Rescues 1,3, 5 and Squad 1 responded along with the EMS Captain.

The Wantagh Fire Department Marine Unit would like to officially congratulate the Atlantic Steamers Fire Company for placing their new fire boat in service. 5M55 is the former Wantagh Marine 1 and was procured after we placed our current Marine 31 in service. Our Assistant Chief of Marine Operations was on hand for their dedication ceremony and wish their chiefs, members, and marine unit crew all the best with their new boat.
