During the FY26 appropriations process, I was proud to secure $1 million for the North Zumbro Sanitary Sewer District Wastewater Facility, a regional treatment facility that will improve service and critical infrastructure for residents across Goodhue, Pine Island, Wanamingo, Zumbrota, and the Prairie Island Indian Community. I joined local officials to get an update on the project and discuss how we can advance regional water infrastructure solutions as we continue to work together to get this much-needed project across the finish line.

PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office is issuing this reminder regarding the safe operation of electric bicycles (e-bikes) within Goodhue County. As e-bike usage continues to increase, it is important that riders and motorists remain attentive and observe all applicable traffic laws to ensure the safety of all roadway users.

E-bikes are capable of reaching higher speeds than traditional bicycles and may accelerate more quickly. Riders are urged to operate their e-bikes responsibly, maintain proper control, and remain alert to their surroundings. Please utilize designated bike lanes when available, obey posted signage, and exercise caution when entering intersections or shared-use areas.

Motorists are asked to remain vigilant for e-bike riders, particularly in areas with higher bicycle traffic. Allow adequate space when passing, reduce speed as necessary, and use heightened awareness at intersections and crosswalks.

The chart (adapted from St. Paul Police Department) has the rules for each vehicle and references state statutes.

The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the cooperation of our community as we work together to promote safe and responsible e-bike operation throughout the county.

The clay sanitary sewer lines will be televised the next couple of day. This will help with capital planning to identify conditions of the pipes. During televising there may be need to jet sections of the clay pipes. The jetting is to clear main sewer lines of sand, grit, solids, and tree roots to ensure the camera can both get through the pipe and show the condition of the pipe. This jetting does not touch service lines from homes to the main. These lines are privately owned by each home/business owner. Some sounds and bubbling of air can occur in basement toilets and floor drains. There is water pressure created during this process that can create air bubble especially if home ventilation lines are plugged. Residents are encouraged to check their ventilation lines yearly for blockage. Please call city hall at 507-824-2477 if you experience any additional signs of sewer issues during the next couple of days.

The Wanamingo Nature Trail Pedestrian Walking Bridge Ramp repairs have started. Homestead Restoration started demolition today and plans to complete the repairs within one week. The bridge will continue to be closed to the public during the repairs. The bridge repair was damaged by a fire in May 2025. The original contractor that was awarded the work late last summer was unable to obtain materials and then be able to schedule completion of the work in 2025. The contractor and the City mutually agreed to void the contract in May 2026 due to additional scheduling conflicts. Homestead Restoration was awarded the project as second lowest bidder. They were able to obtain materials and work the project into their July schedule. Thank you, Jacob Vredenburg, for being able to rearrange your work schedule to help out the community with the bridge ramp repairs!
