First Responders dedicate their lives to taking care of others, but who is taking care of them? They face challenges that most of us will never see or understand. This week we want to recognize the high stress, long hours, and extreme focus, strength and resilience you all show.

Here in Madison County, 14 of our first responders recently came together and were trained in peer support.

🌤️ 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 = 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗰𝗲

With temperatures expected to rise this week, ice conditions on lakes and ponds can change fast. Melting from above and below can quickly weaken what once seemed solid. Late-season ice is often unpredictable, even after a cold night.

The DEC recommends at least 3-4 inches of solid, clear ice before walking on it. Keep in mind, ice thickness is never consistent across an entire body of water. Check frequently and avoid areas that look darker, slushy, or wet.

𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 (𝗡𝗲𝘄, 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆):
• 2 inches or less – Stay Off
• 4 inches – Ice fishing or activities on foot
• 5 inches – Snowmobiles and ATVs
• 8–12 inches – Car or small pickup
• 12–15 inches – Medium truck

Important reminders:
• Slush ice is about 50% weaker
• Ice over moving water is about 20% weaker
• White or cloudy ice requires roughly double the thickness

Be especially cautious near shorelines, docks with bubblers, and anywhere streams enter or exit a lake. These areas weaken first as temperatures climb.

As we get closer to spring, the safest choice may simply be to wait it out. If you’re unsure, stay off the ice. 🧊

As we head into the weekend, temperatures in Madison County are expected to dip into the single digits at times. Even without new snowfall, prolonged cold can still create dangerous conditions.

𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗬 𝗗𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧 ✅
• Keep vehicles fueled and ready before heading out
• Charge phones and have flashlights and fresh batteries on hand
• Dress in layers and limit time outdoors when possible
• Keep extra blankets and winter gear in your vehicle

Dangerous cold moves in tonight into Saturday, with below-zero temps possible. A 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 is in effect for late Saturday night through Monday evening, and accumulating snow is expected (heaviest potential Sunday into Monday).

The National Weather Service (Binghamton) has issued a 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 for Madison County.

Due to this warning, Madison County has issued a 𝗡𝗼 𝗨𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 from 𝟭𝟬:𝟬𝟬 𝗣𝗠 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 (Monday, December 29, 2025) through 𝟳:𝟬𝟬 𝗣𝗠 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, December 30.

Madison County continues to be in contact with OCWA and Onondaga County regarding the major water main break that is impacting many OCWA customers.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀:
• Town of Manlius (including the Villages of Minoa, Fayetteville, and Manlius)
• Town of Pompey
• Town of DeWitt (including customers served by the DeWitt Water system)
• Town of Sullivan (including the Village of Chittenango)
• Town of Lenox (including the Village of Canastota)
• Town of Lincoln

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
• Madison County and OCWA continue to urge residents in impacted communities above to conserve water as OCWA conducts a complex repair project on the ruptured water main. We also ask residents and businesses in the City of Oneida to voluntarily conserve water as well.
• Thank you again to the City of Oneida, their water continues feed the impacted areas in Madison County, but water conservation efforts need to continue.
• OCWA is working diligently on repairs. Weather has been a factor, and will continue to be. Safety of the workers is number one priority, however they continue to work the best they can to get this repair completed.
