An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day.

THE LAW SAYS:
- It is illegal - and very dangerous - to pass a stopped school bus when the large red lights located on top of the bus are flashing. Flashing lights mean the bus is picking up or discharging students.
- You must stop whether you are approaching the school bus from the front or overtaking it from the rear.
- You must always stop for flashing red lights, even on divided and multilane highways and on school grounds.
- The first-time fine for illegally passing a school bus is a $250 to $400 fine, 5 points on your license, and/or possibly 30 days in jail.
- Worse yet, the memory of hitting or killing a child may be one you carry for the rest of your life!

๐‘น๐‘ฌ๐‘ด๐‘ฌ๐‘ด๐‘ฉ๐‘ฌ๐‘น:
Yellow lights mean the bus is going to stop. Slow down!

Red lights mean students are getting on or off the bus.

It Can Wait! ๐Ÿ“ต๐Ÿš—

Distraction negatively effects driving performance for all drivers but can be especially dangerous for young, inexperienced drivers. Even though teens recognize that talking or texting on a cell phone or using social media apps while driving is unsafe, they often engage in these behaviors while driving.

Results from the 2019 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that, among U.S. high school students who drove, 39% texted or e-mailed while driving at least once during the 30 days before the survey. Typing text messages reduces drivers' capability to adequately direct attention to the roadway, to respond to important traffic events, and to control a vehicle within a lane and with respect to other vehicles.

Seat belts are designed to help keep occupants inside vehicles and lower the risk of being ejected if a crash occurs. Seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about half. Seat belts were estimated to have saved the lives of 14,955 passenger vehicle occupants in 2017 alone; an additional 2,549 lives could have been saved that year with 100% seat belt use.

No one should drink and drive. Drinking any amount of alcohol before driving increases crash risk among all drivers including teen drivers.

Drinking alcohol is illegal for people less than 21 years of age, as is driving after drinking any amount of alcohol. Despite this, in 2019, 24% of drivers aged 15โ€“20 who were killed in fatal motor vehicle crashes had been drinking.

Lenox, NY - The Madison County Sheriffโ€™s Office is investigating a series of gravestone desecrations occurring at local cemeteries. Increased patrols and monitoring efforts have been implemented as part of the ongoing response. The Town Supervisor, Meghan Samsel, is working closely with the Madison County Sheriffโ€™s Office to identify those responsible and ensure the safety and respect of these sacred spaces.

We ask residents to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity in or around cemetery grounds to local law enforcement. Individuals with information that may assist in the investigation are encouraged to come forward.

Sheriff Todd Hood Announces Madison County Sheriffโ€™s Participate in โ€œPut the Phone Away or Payโ€ Traffic Initiative.

The Madison County Sheriffโ€™s Office would like to remind motorists that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is promoting a โ€œPut the Phone Away or Payโ€ distracted driving enforcement initiative in NY from April 9th thru April 13th, 2026.

Distracted driving is the leading cause of motor vehicle crashes nationwide, and these crashes often result in needless death and injury. The Madison County Sheriffโ€™s Office will participate in the traffic safety campaign and will have additional patrols during this period. Our intent is to reduce the number of overall crashes in Madison County and promote voluntary compliance.

The dedicated traffic enforcement patrols will be targeting motorists who commit cell phone use/texting violations in addition to other observed violations commonly associated with distracted driving. Grant money obtained from the Governorโ€™s Traffic Safety Committee funds the dedicated traffic patrols.

The Madison County Sheriffโ€™s Office is encouraging motorists to focus their attention on driving to help keep themselves and members of our community safe.
