The Wamego Fire Department would like to thank the Belvue Township Fire Department for coming over and participating in some mutual aid training!

Tonight’s training focused on the fundamentals of hose deployment and nozzle operations. These skills are critical to ensuring an effective and coordinated response on the fireground.

Not only do both departments benefit from getting hands-on experience with different equipment, meeting fellow firefighters, and building camaraderie, but the community benefits as well.

Training together strengthens our working relationships and improves our ability to serve the public when emergencies occur.

We look forward to more mutual aid training opportunities in the near future!

We would like to take a moment to recognize and congratulate one of our own on a significant accomplishment.

Firefighter Kaleb Baxter has successfully completed the Firefighter I & II Academy hosted by the Soldier Township Fire Department.

Since January, Kaleb has dedicated countless hours to his training, traveling to Soldier Township—just north of Topeka—twice a week on his own time after finishing work.

Kaleb will soon take the final examinations required to become nationally certified. Achieving these certifications demonstrates not only his commitment to professional development, but also his dedication to serving the citizens of Wamego and the fire service as a whole.

Please join us in congratulating Kaleb on this outstanding achievement and wishing him the best of luck as he prepares for his national certification testing.

Public Service Announcement.

On April 18, 2026, at approximately 5:19 PM, the City of Wamego Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 700 block of Plum Street. A neighbor heard smoke alarms sounding and, after being unable to make contact with anyone inside, called 911. The caller reported heavy smoke inside the home and visible smoke coming from the windows.

Fire crews arrived within minutes and quickly began fire suppression and a search of the residence. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished rapidly, and no occupants were found inside.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role smoke alarms play in protecting lives and property. In this case, it was the sound of the alarms that alerted a neighbor to the danger—prompting a quick emergency response that prevented the situation from becoming far worse.

Working smoke detectors save lives!

Make sure your home is equipped with properly installed and maintained smoke alarms. Test them regularly and replace batteries as needed. Early detection can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

The City of Wamego Fire Department would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the Louisville Fire Department, St. George Fire Department, Wamego Police Department, Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, and Pottawatomie County EMS for their assistance during this incident.

Today, on National Firefighters Day, we take a moment to recognize and honor the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of firefighters everywhere.

Here in Wamego, your fire department is proud to be 100% volunteer. That means every call—day or night—is answered by members of your community who step away from their families, jobs, and daily lives to serve others when it matters most.

From emergency medical calls to structure fires and everything in between, our volunteers are committed to protecting and supporting this community with professionalism and heart.

We also want to extend our sincere thanks to all of our mutual aid departments, who are also volunteers, that stand beside us when our community needs it most. Your partnership, reliability, and shared commitment do not go unnoticed.

We’re grateful for the continued support from our residents—it’s what makes our mission possible.
If you see a firefighter today, take a moment to say thank you!

🚨🚨🚨Update! As many of have assumed, this was an April fools post! Wamego Fire Dept is NOT getting any air assets!🚨🚨🚨

The Wamego Fire Department is pleased to announce that, as of 0800 hours today (04/01/26), Air 1 has officially been placed into service.

Air 1 is a much-needed asset for the City of Wamego and has been long overdue (like… really overdue).
This state-of-the-art unit will greatly enhance our response capabilities, and you can expect to see Air 1 operating overhead in the near future.

Please don’t be alarmed if you hear sirens coming from the sky… we promise everything is under control.

🚨🚒🧯Today, the Wamego Fire Department visited West Elementary School as part of the “Classrooms to Careers” program.

Fire Chief Stultz and Assistant Chief Womack talked with students about what it takes to join the fire service—whether as a career or a volunteer—and shared some important fire safety tips along the way.

Thank you to the students and staff for the warm welcome and thoughtful questions. We may have a few future firefighters in the group!

Yesterday evening, the City of Wamego Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a cat stuck in a tree (cue the funny comments).

The fire department responded with our ladder truck and successfully removed the cat from the tree, avoiding a potential CATastrophe.

Thank you to the concerned citizen who called in the concern! 🐱🚒🌳

Last night, the City of Wamego Fire Department spent the evening training alongside firefighters from the Soldier Township fire dept, Hoyt Fire District 3, and Silver Lake Fire Department. Crews worked on hose advancement and participated in live fire training exercises.

It is always valuable to train with outside agencies—even those we may not regularly work with on emergency scenes. These opportunities provide new perspectives and small nuggets of knowledge. In the fire service, even the smallest piece of information can eventually make a big difference in the outcome of an incident.

We would like to thank the Soldier Township Fire Department for hosting and providing the opportunity for this excellent training. 🚒🔥
