🇺🇸 25 YEARS LATER — WE REMEMBER 🇺🇸

September 11, 2001 is a day that most of us will never forget.

25 years ago today, our country was changed forever. Nearly 3,000 people went to work, boarded airplanes, or simply started their day, never knowing it would be their last.

2,977 people lost their lives.

Among them were 343 firefighters, along with police officers, EMTs, and countless other first responders who ran toward the danger to help others.

But the loss didn't end that day.

In the 25 years since 9/11, more than 600 FDNY members have died from illnesses related to their work at the World Trade Center, a painful reminder that the effects of that day have continued long after the smoke cleared.

Behind every number is a name.
Behind every name is a person.
And behind every person is a family, friends, and a community that was forever changed.

Today, we remember the people who were lost, the families who were left behind, and the countless first responders and civilians whose lives were forever affected.

We remember the courage, the kindness, and the willingness of ordinary people to help one another during one of the darkest days in our nation's history.

25 years later, we still remember.
25 years later, we still honor them.
25 years later, we still say: Never Forget.

This evening, your Wamego City Firefighters had the opportunity to participate in some important hands-on training! 🚒🔥

Members in attendance spent the evening working on vehicle extrication techniques. Motor vehicle accidents involving entrapment do not happen every day, so when they do, we must be prepared to perform at the highest level possible.

Hands-on training like this is extremely valuable, and we would like to give a HUGE shoutout to Wamego Recycling and Michelle Kennedy for donating vehicles for our members to train with! Their continued support helps make training opportunities like this possible and allows the Wamego Fire Department to continue improving our skills so we can better serve our community and taxpayers. 💪

Lastly, we want to thank our dedicated members who take time away from their families and personal lives to continue learning and getting better. As a reminder, the Wamego City Fire Department is 100% volunteer. These men and women willingly give their time to train, respond, and be ready to help those in need.

Last night, members of the Wamego Fire Department took part in our annual refresher training for shoreline and still-water rescue operations! 🌊🚒

Members reviewed proper throw bag operations and practiced entering the water to safely locate and remove a victim. Training like this helps ensure our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively when emergencies happen in and around the water.

Lastly, members used the water slide to practice using the safety line break away. In case of an emergency where the safety line comprises the safety of our members, the member can pull a cord that will release the safety.

A big thank you to all of our members who took the time to train and continue building the skills needed to serve our community! 💪

The Wamego Fire Department is always grateful for the equipment and resources provided to us by our taxpayers. That support allows us to be there not only for our own community, but also to assist neighboring departments when they need a helping hand.

We are equally grateful for all of our mutual aid partners who are always willing to step up and provide the same support when we need it. Fire service is truly a team effort, and we are fortunate to have such great departments willing to work together to protect our communities

A huge thank you to Firefighter Ethan Pardue for taking our SCBA bottles to Wamego to be filled and helping make sure our crews remain ready for the next call.

We also want to thank City of Wamego Fire Department Assistant Chiefs Brian Devine and Anthony Womack for their assistance, and the entire Wamego Fire Department for allowing us to use their SCBA fill site.

Strong partnerships between neighboring fire departments make all of us better. Sharing resources, helping one another, and working together strengthens our ability to serve our communities when it matters most.

Dear Wamego Community, Neighbors, and Friends,
As the final echoes of the fireworks fade and we look back on yet another spectacular Fourth of July, our hearts are filled with immense pride and gratitude. Year after year, Wamego transforms into a vibrant hub of celebration, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors from across the region to experience the magic of Boomtown. Pulling off a multi-sensory event of this massive scale takes months of meticulous planning, flawless coordination, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. This incredible feat would be absolutely impossible without the dedication, sacrifices, and teamwork of our regional partners.
We want to extend our highest praise and a deeply heartfelt thank you to the outstanding agencies and organizations that worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our community safe, moving, and thriving:
• Bellevue Fire Department, Louisville Fire Department, and St. George Fire Department for providing critical, on-the-scene fire protection and standby readiness.
• Pottawatomie County EMS for their rapid, professional medical response and care throughout the heavily crowded festivities.
• Pottawatomie County Emergency Management and Marshall County Emergency Management for seamlessly coordinating the complex, multi-agency logistics behind the scenes.
• Kansas Highway Patrol, Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Officers, and the Wamego Police Department for their monumental efforts in managing massive traffic flow, securing event zones, and ensuring a peaceful, family-friendly environment for all.
• Wamego Public Works for their incredible infrastructure support, setup, and tireless cleanup efforts that kept our beautiful town looking its absolute best.
• The Pyro Crew for their world-class expertise, precision engineering, and sheer artistry in designing and executing a jaw-dropping fireworks display that truly rivaled major metropolitan shows.
• National Weather Service for providing the crucial, real-time meteorological data and monitoring necessary to keep our outdoor spectators safe from unpredictable summer weather.
• USD 320 and ATA Bus for graciously assisting with community resources, facilities, and vital park-and-ride transportation logistics to ease congestion.
• Wamego Chamber of Commerce for their brilliant organization, continuous promotion, and leadership in bringing our local business community together to host this historic tradition.
• KDOT for their essential collaboration on highway logistics, signage, and traffic management to ensure our visitors arrived and returned home safely.
Beyond these organized agencies, we owe a massive debt of gratitude to the countless community volunteers who stepped up to donate their valuable time, energy, and smiles. From direct traffic guiding to cleanup and logistics support, your community spirit represents the very best of Wamego.

The grills are heating up, the red, white, and blue is coming out, and fireworks season is officially here! As we get ready to celebrate Independence Day, the Wamego Fire Department wants to remind everyone to have fun, make great memories, and keep safety at the top of the list.

🧨 Fireworks may be discharged within the City of Wamego from July 1 through July 5. We've attached the City's approved schedule so you know exactly when fireworks are permitted.

As you're celebrating, remember a few simple safety tips:
💦 Keep a hose or bucket of water nearby.
🧒 Fireworks and sparklers should always be used with adult supervision.
🚫 Never attempt to relight a firework that doesn't ignite.
🗑️ Soak spent fireworks in water before throwing them away.
🚒 If a fire starts or someone is injured, don't hesitate to call 911.

Have an incredible Fourth of July, enjoy the time with family and friends, and make it a celebration to remember!
