🚧 KAW VALLEY ROAD PROJECT UPDATE 🚧

Beginning Monday, September 14th, construction on the Kaw Valley Road project will move into its final phase.

The intersection of Kaw Valley Road and Say Road will close to traffic as work continues in that area. At the same time, traffic control on Kaw Valley Road will shift north, allowing Kaw Valley Road to reopen through the new north entrance to Wamego Middle School.

🚧 What drivers need to know:

-The Kaw Valley Road & Say Road intersection will be closed
-Kaw Valley Road will reopen up to the new north entrance of Wamego Middle School
-Drivers traveling through the area should plan for changing traffic patterns and use alternate routes around the Say Road intersection

🚸 Wamego Middle School families: USD 320 staff is asking parents to use the new north entrance off Kaw Valley Road for student drop-off and pick-up. The Say Road access will be used for school buses during this phase of construction. Please continue to follow traffic-flow information provided directly by USD 320.

Please continue to use caution around construction crews and allow a little extra time when traveling through the area.

🚧 COLUMBIAN ROAD CLOSURE – FRIDAY MORNING 🚧

Please be aware that Columbian Road will be closed from Hwy 24 to Country Club Drive tomorrow morning for the Wamego Cross Country Invitational.

⏰ 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM
📍 Columbian Road | Hwy 24 to Country Club Drive

The Cross Country Invitational is typically held on a Saturday, but due to weather, this year’s meet has been rescheduled to Friday. We understand this last-minute change and weekday closure may affect school and work morning commutes, so please plan ahead, allow a little extra travel time, and plan to use an alternate route.

Please also use extra caution in the surrounding area as runners, spectators, buses, and event traffic will be present throughout the morning.

Grab your costumes, bring your treat bags, and get ready for a fun evening in Downtown Wamego!

Come dressed in your Halloween best and enjoy trick-or-treating throughout downtown!

Since Halloween falls on Saturday this year, Downtown Trick or Treat will take place the evening before. Families will likely also head out for traditional neighborhood trick-or-treating on Halloween night, so Wamego residents may see little ghosts and goblins out and about both Friday and Saturday evening! 🎃

We can’t wait to see Downtown Wamego filled with costumes, candy, and Halloween fun!

The Wamego City Park Children’s Train will not be running tomorrow, Saturday, September 5.

Weather permitting, the train will resume its normal schedule on Tuesday, September 8.

The property includes a 4-bedroom, 2-bath ranch-style home with a large backyard and unfinished basement and is being sold AS IS, WHERE IS.

All bids must include the offered purchase price and required financial documentation. Complete bid requirements and additional sale information are available at wamego.org/bid-list.

🚧 GREAT NEWS FOR THE KAW VALLEY ROAD PROJECT! 🎉

The original project timeline anticipated that work on Kaw Valley Road would continue through the end of 2026. However, the contractors have worked diligently to expedite construction and minimize disruptions to school traffic. Crews are now hopeful that Kaw Valley Road from Highway 24 to 16th Street will reopen before school begins!

This progress has been made possible through strong coordination between the City of Wamego, USD 320, and the project contractors. Each group has worked closely together to keep the project moving and create the best possible outcome for students, families, residents, and drivers.

Once the section from Highway 24 to 16th Street opens, crews hope to move quickly through the remaining closed section from 16th Street to Say Road. An updated reopening timeline for that area has not yet been confirmed, and we will share additional information as soon as it is finalized.

Because this project directly affects traffic near Wamego Middle School, USD 320 will soon share specific information regarding school traffic, arrival and dismissal routes, and any temporary adjustments families should expect. As the school year begins, families are also encouraged to remind students to stay out of construction zones, follow all posted signs and barriers, and use designated sidewalks and crossings whenever available. Please use extra caution when walking, biking, or driving near the project area.

☀️ SAFE SUMMER IN WAMEGO — FINAL WEEK ☀️

🌟 Wamego Kids Make Safe Choices!
We are wrapping up our Safe Summer in Wamego series with a final review of the safety topics we’ve covered this summer.

Over the past 9 weeks, we’ve talked about:
✅ knowing important information
✅ pool safety
✅ bike, scooter, and pedestrian safety
✅ severe weather awareness
✅ park safety and being aware
✅ firework safety
✅ heat safety
✅ river, pond, and open water safety
✅ being home alone and changing plans

For our 10th and final post, we’re taking time to look back and help kids remember the safe choices they’ve practiced all summer long.

This week’s activity page is Safe Summer Bingo! Families can use the bingo card to review safety reminders together and talk through what kids should do in different situations.

🚧 STREET PROJECT UPDATE 🚧

After reviewing the remaining work, contractor resources, and resident access needs, the sequence of work has been adjusted.

Beginning today, Monday, July 27th, crews will focus on:
➡️ 6th Street between Walnut and Chestnut Street
➡️ 5th Street between Chestnut and Spruce Street

The previously announced work on 7th Street will be completed after these sections are finished and reopened.

This adjustment will allow residents between 6th and 7th Streets to maintain alley access between Walnut and Chestnut while this work is underway.

Walnut Street remains open to through traffic.

We appreciate the contractors taking another look at the remaining work and adjusting the sequence to make the best use of resources while limiting impacts to residents when possible. There are only a few sections left, and we’re excited to keep moving toward the finish line! 👷‍♂️🚧
