April is National Distracted Driving
Awareness Month!

Texting while driving remains one of the most dangerous forms of distracted driving. At any given moment in the United States, an estimated 660,000 drivers are using or manipulating electronic devices behind the wheel—a number that has remained largely unchanged for over a decade. What was once considered risky behavior has become a persistent and deadly public safety crisis on America’s roads.

Distracted driving continues to disproportionately affect younger drivers. Among drivers ages 15 to 19 involved in fatal crashes, about 8% were reported as distracted—the highest proportion of any age group.

Drive Sober This Halloween
This Halloween, let’s make happy memories, not tragic nightmares. The only thing scarier than zombies and witches loose on the streets is an impaired driver. Even one alcoholic beverage could be one too many for some drivers. So, if you plan to drive, plan to refrain from alcohol. If you do plan to enjoy some witch’s brew, be sure to arrange a sober ride home in advance. Stay safe on Halloween night, and every night.

National Teen Driver Safety Week- October 19-25
As National Teen Driver Safety Week approaches, it’s a crucial time to spotlight one of the leading causes of teen deaths in the United States — traffic crashes. In 2023, 2,611 people died in crashes involving teen drivers (ages 15-18), including 822 teen drivers and 604 passengers riding with them. Among those teen passengers, 62% were other teens, and sadly, the majority were male.

Why Are Teens More at Risk?
Teens face unique challenges behind the wheel due to inexperience, making them more vulnerable to crashes. Key risk factors include:
• Alcohol and drug use
• Not wearing a seat belt
• Distracted driving (texting, phone use, eating, etc.)
• Having additional passengers
• Speeding
• Drowsy driving

Beware of Scammers Claiming to be Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles
(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) has received reports of a possible texting scam being perpetrated on Ohioans today from scammers claiming to be from Ohio BMV.
Ohio residents have reported receiving text messages from scammers claiming to be from BMV and informing the recipients that they have an outstanding traffic ticket. The text then instructs the recipient to pay immediately to avoid a license suspension. This particular scam is a phishing attempt that is being reported by drivers nationwide and is designed to trick residents into giving up personal or financial information.
“If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,” said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman. “Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.”
Ohioans can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov. If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
