National Teen Driver Safety Week- October 19-25
As National Teen Driver Safety Week approaches, it’s a crucial time to spotlight one of the leading causes of teen deaths in the United States — traffic crashes. In 2023, 2,611 people died in crashes involving teen drivers (ages 15-18), including 822 teen drivers and 604 passengers riding with them. Among those teen passengers, 62% were other teens, and sadly, the majority were male.
Why Are Teens More at Risk?
Teens face unique challenges behind the wheel due to inexperience, making them more vulnerable to crashes. Key risk factors include:
• Alcohol and drug use
• Not wearing a seat belt
• Distracted driving (texting, phone use, eating, etc.)
• Having additional passengers
• Speeding
• Drowsy driving
