Notice is hereby given that a proposed budget has been submitted to the Board of Education of Huerfano School District RE-1 for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026 and has been filed in the office of the Human Resources where it is available for public inspection by appointment, and is available on the district website. Such proposed budget will be considered for adoption at a regular meeting of the Board or Education of said Huerfano School District RE-1, June 22, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. at the Huerfano School District Office, 201 East Fifth St, Walsenburg, CO 81089
Any person paying school taxes in said district may at any time prior to the final adoption of the budget file or register his objections thereto.

Re: Superintendent and Change.org Petition

I write to you on behalf of the Huerfano School District Board of Education. The Board is aware of a Change.org petition calling for the removal of Superintendent Robert Howard based on alleged misconduct. While the Board recognizes and agrees that individuals have First Amendment rights, the type of statements in the Change.org petition are careless and unsupported by facts. There is no place in public education for such false and libelous rhetoric.

The Board wants the community to know that Mr. Howard has not engaged in the misconduct falsely alleged and that it continues to support him as the District’s Superintendent.

4:30pm, Monday May 18, 1026

Walsenburg community, Today the Walsenburg PD received a call stating that someone had a bomb and a gun in the school. The administration, staff and law enforcement took all the necessary steps to protect the students. We decided to dismiss early to assure the safety of the students. It appears that the call may be a random swatting attempt, because several districts in the front range received similar threats. We will be back to normal tomorrow.
