Yesterday, Isabel and I participated in the Annual Trans Resistance March and Vigil - it was an amazing experience. We both wished that we could have stayed all day - I couldn’t be any more proud of the conversations we had before, during, and after the event.

Representation

The Town of Walpole needs to have representation in the School Committee that mirrors the town population. I am running because people of color should be part of that representation. My family and I love to spend time with friends throughout the community, and I want my children to be even prouder of the Walpole community than they already are. Your vote for me will be a vote for the first Latina woman in a town-wide elected position and will bring all of us closer to an even better Walpole.

21st-Century learning

I value 21st-century learning practices to meet the needs of our students. As a member of the School Committee, I will recognize and support non-traditional paths to success. Not every Walpole High School graduate wants to or can pursue higher education. All graduates are entitled to receive the tools they need to help them succeed in whatever path is in front of them.

I will advocate for an education based on critical thinking, empathy, collaboration, and communication that will provide students with the tools and skills they need to succeed

I will encourage strategic planning, with a focus on big-picture goals, so that the Walpole school system can meet or exceed the state/national standards. Our schools should not be playing catch-up with state mandates.

Accountability and transparency

I value accountability and transparency. As a member of the School Committee, I will increase transparency from the School Committee to schools, to parents, and to the community. I will increase community engagement and parent involvement with critical town-wide issues.

I will also hold myself and the School Committee accountable for the big challenges facing our schools today. I will support students, teachers, and schools through the challenges of COVID-19 and the recovery from the pandemic. I will also see the middle school project through to the finish line and advocate for the diverse needs of our students.

Diversity, belonging, and inclusion

I value diversity, belonging, and inclusion. As a member of the School Committee, I will raise awareness of diversity and inclusion. Schools welcome children from all backgrounds and should lead the way to ensure every member of our diverse community feels accepted and included. As a community, ensuring fairness, equity, and inclusion among all students will maximize their learning opportunities. I will champion the value of a diverse and inclusive learning environment, which is known to promote creativity, critical thinking, readiness for adulthood, and a culturally responsive environment. I would also like to increase diversity among staff at Walpole Public Schools.

I will collaborate with the school committee to provide the roadmap and tools for schools to develop and strengthen awareness and celebration of the differences our children bring into the classroom and our community. I’ll ensure diversity efforts focus on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, religion/spiritual practices, learning styles, cognitive and physical disabilities.

My Vision for Walpole Public Schools

A solid and comprehensive education is one of the best tools available for a better future. Education is not just what our children learn academically; a solid education must include lessons in building and maintaining healthy relationships, leadership skills, curiosity, social skills, self-belief, self-advocacy, confidence, and communication skills. These are the lessons I will advocate for as a member of the School Committee. The K–12 years are the foundation years that will lead students to success as an adult no matter their chosen path. K–12 are the years that can frame the future generation.

A Little About Me

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, I have been an active member of the Walpole community since I moved here 18 years ago. My husband and I are raising two children in the Walpole Public School system: a 15-year-old daughter who goes to Walpole High School, and a 10-year-old son who attends Fisher School. I am currently a Fisher School Council member and a member at large of the Middle School Building Committee. I also actively participated in the development of the WPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan.

As a bilingual/bicultural Latina woman, I dedicated over 20 years of my career to supporting survivors of domestic/sexual violence and homicide. More recently, I have shifted my focus to preventing harm that is done to others. Education and systemic change are critical parts of preventing people from harming others. With my deep investment in the Walpole community, and particularly in the education of Walpole youth, I bring dedication, passion, and vision that are vital in these challenging times.

11 years ago I spent the day in bed while Justin celebrated Mother’s Day with our daughter (the one who first called me Mami), his mother and step mom.... I spent the day in bed because I was in the middle of my last chance of becoming a mama for the second time.... IVF... if it wasn’t for my ham I would say that was the worst experience of my life.... I share this because from that experience I learned so much. Motherhood is not just for those who can get pregnant or adopt a child... motherhood is way beyond that. Just like I celebrate my mother on Father’s Day, today I celebrate all of the people that have an impact in the life of others. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers regardless if you have a child or not ... Happy Mother’s Day to all people that a have a significant impact in the life of a young one... and to those who want nothing more than to become a mother I send you my love and courage. For those of you who have lost a child ... my eternal strength and love goes to you.
