Today, I joined our community at Rose Hills Memorial Park to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11.

The Field of Healing, with 2,977 American flags, honors every innocent life lost and the courageous first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, our nation found hope in unity. Americans came together to comfort grieving families, help strangers, and remind one another that we are strongest when we stand as one.

We must continue telling the stories of the brave men and women who gave their lives saving others, as well as every soul who perished that day. May their courage, compassion, and sacrifice never be forgotten.

First celebrated in New York City in 1882 and established as a federal holiday in 1894, Labor Day honors the workers whose skill, sacrifice, and determination built our country. The labor movement helped secure safer workplaces, fairer wages, reasonable working hours, and the right of employees to organize and advocate together.

Diamond Bar is proud to be home to IBEW Local 47, which represents thousands of electrical workers across Southern California. Our city also hosts IBEW Local 11’s District 6 office, further strengthening Diamond Bar’s connection to the skilled men and women who power and build our
Region.

I also want to recognize AFSCME Local 917, which represents the City of Diamond Bar’s part time Parks and Recreation employees. Thank you to its members and representatives for their partnership and for the important work they do serving our residents and families.

Today, we celebrate every worker whose dedication keeps Diamond Bar and communities across America moving forward. Wishing you and your family a safe and restful Labor Day.

Glad to attend today’s Chinese American Elected Officials Candidates Training, led by political consultants Luis Alvarado and Andrew Pina of LA Campaigns.

Chinese American Elected Officials is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to cultivating community leaders, creating opportunities for networking and collaboration, and encouraging greater Chinese American participation in government and civic life.

Programs like this help educate and prepare the next generation of leaders who are ready and willing to step forward, serve their communities, and make a difference.

Last night’s City Council meeting covered several important items for Diamond Bar.

We first proclaimed World Taekwondo Day and welcomed the Diamond Bar High School Taekwondo Club for a special demonstration.

On the legislative front, after months of negotiations, we are proud to approve an agreement with the San Gabriel Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce that will bring monthly business events back to Diamond Bar, with hopes of adding a farmers market (yes!) in the near future.

The Council also unanimously approved a 36 unit condominium development that includes much needed affordable housing for young families looking to build their future here. The project will be located near the future Diamond Bar Town Center, a 40 plus acre mixed use area planned to bring new housing, dining, entertainment, and gathering spaces to our community.

All of this is part of the work we are doing to make sure Diamond Bar continues to be a city of choice for families, with strong neighborhoods, new opportunities, and a community people are proud to call home. I truly believe the best of Diamond Bar is still ahead of us.

Diamond Bar has lost someone truly special with the passing of Wanda Tanaka.

For decades, Wanda and her beloved late husband, former Mayor Jack Tanaka, gave so much of themselves to this community. They were the kind of couple who did not just live in Diamond Bar, they helped shape its character through service, kindness, mentorship, and an extraordinary commitment to young people.

Wanda and Jack were especially devoted to the students of Diamond Bar. Through their longtime involvement with the Diamond Bar Breakfast Lions Club and local Leo Clubs, they mentored generations of students and taught them what service and leadership really mean.

I was fortunate to experience Wanda’s kindness personally. When I first ran for City Council eight years ago, she was one of the first people I reached out to. She barely knew me, yet she welcomed me, believed in me, and supported me throughout that journey. When I was elected, Wanda swore me into office, a moment I will always treasure.

But my story is only one of countless lives Wanda touched.

She believed in people. She encouraged young people. She showed up for her community. And after Jack passed away, she continued carrying forward the love and legacy they had built together.

Diamond Bar is better because Wanda Tanaka was part of it. Her legacy lives on in the students she mentored, the people she encouraged, and the community she loved so deeply.

Rest in peace, Wanda. Keep smiling and keep taking those pictures. Until we meet again.

Great conversations at today’s Coffee with a Cop at Tacitas Coffee.

We discussed residents’ concerns with unhoused individuals near bus stops and rail tracks, reviewed our public safety stats dashboard, and discussed ongoing efforts to address traffic concerns affecting HOAs near Chaparral Elementary.

These meetings matter because they give residents with real, vested concerns a chance to speak directly with our deputies and City representatives—and help us better understand what’s happening on the ground.

If you haven’t been to a Coffee with a Cop yet, I encourage you to join us at a future one. Come grab a cup of coffee, ask questions, and be part of the conversation.

Spent the day at the Contract Cities Association California Contract Cities Association Fall Educational Summit, connecting with leaders from member cities and comparing how communities across the region are tackling many of the same challenges we face at home.

The sessions covered everything from regional approaches to public safety and human services, to LA County Measure G, binding arbitration, and the measures voters will see this November. One takeaway that kept coming up: cities are stronger when we coordinate, share what works, and speak with a unified voice.

For me, these gatherings are also about making sure Diamond Bar has a seat at the table—building relationships with our partner cities and advocating for the resources, policies, and local control our community needs.

It was great to attend the 2026 LA Open International Taekwondo Championship today at Azusa Pacific University.

This premier sparring tournament brought together athletes from across California and beyond, from beginner grassroots competitors to world-class black belts.

A special thank you to Grandmaster Keun Moo Ryu of World Champion Taekwondo Academy - Diamond Bar, CA for organizing today’s event that promotes discipline, perseverance, respect, and sportsmanship through competition.
