Recently, we learned that some developers had submitted a proposal to annex land bordering Clayton’s east side into the City of Clayton. This proposal was concerning for many reasons: it would have resulted in habitat loss and development in an area with a very high fire danger, and it would have undermined the county's Urban Limit Line.

Save Mount Diablo has opposed irresponsible developments like this time and time again, so a proposal like this was no surprise.

The real surprise? The City of Clayton had no idea it was happening!

Save Mount Diablo funded a sophisticated weather station to provide environmental and climate data in support of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo's recovery efforts for the endangered blunt-nosed leopard lizard.

Using the weather station data, the biologists running the program are learning more about how to rear the lizards to increase their survival rates.

The blunt-nosed leopard lizard was one of the first animals to be protected under the Endangered Species Act in 1967. In 2020, as this lizard's population on the Panoche Plateau reached the brink of extinction, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo took action.

They collected less than 10 lizards and began a breeding program, with the goal of eventually releasing the offspring back into their rugged Panoche Plateau habitat.

This amazing program has already celebrated considerable successes: a total of 118 blunt-nosed leopard lizards has been released into the wild over the past three years.

The goal? They plan on continuing reintroductions until 50 or more natural-born females successfully reproduce for three consecutive years.

Did you know that we live near one of the best areas for stargazing in the US?

The darkness of the Diablo Range makes for an extraordinary stargazing experience.

Despite its relative close proximity to many populations centers, its lack of development, major roads, and cellphone coverage have led to an unusual lack of light pollution.

To help you better understand the unique stargazing opportunities that the Diablo Range provides, we've compiled a few organizations and locations that will help you see this region's night sky like never before.
