Brandi Mandato on the need to protect and support people truly in need of disability benefits while properly overseeing the program to prevent abuse. ““People with disabilities should never have to fight harder for benefits they’ve earned because of someone else’s failure to follow the rules.

Let me be clear: protecting disability benefits for people who genuinely need them and holding public officials accountable are not competing goals. We can and must do both.

This is not about making life harder for people with disabilities. It’s about making sure taxpayer-funded systems are administered fairly, eligibility rules are enforced consistently, and positions of public trust don’t come with a different set of rules.

When oversight fails, we shouldn’t punish the people who depend on these benefits. We should fix the system, protect those who deserve support, and demand accountability from those responsible.

That’s what fairness looks like. And it should apply to all of us.”

Comptroller Sean Scanlon is moving the bloated state-employee disability system in the right direction.
