This West Bloomfield woman had a good explanation for why there is more and more political talk on Nextdoor. A few years ago, I met a Russian woman who lived in West Bloomfield and had immigrated to the United States. She explained that in Russia, politics was always part of people's conversation because government policies and decisions affected every aspect of their lives.
When she first came to the United States, she found that people could focus on their families, and their own lives without constantly worrying about government interference so few people spoke about the government. That freedom from an overbearing government was the one thing she cherished most about America.
But as the years passed, she began to notice politics was increasingly creeping into everyday conversations, and government control and interference seemed to be expanding into more and more areas of people’s lives. It frightened her because she recognized that pattern from the country she had left.
She actually teared up as she posed the question: if America continues to change, and if we lose our freedom here, where else can she and her family go? It was a very sobering conversation.
