May 31 is National Dam Safety Awareness Day. Today, we commemorate the failure of the South Fork Dam in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1889, resulting in the loss of life of 2,220 people.

Dams play a crucial role in managing water for flood risk, power generation, environmental conservation, and recreation, but none are risk-free. Dam safety programs, like the one from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, help federal, state, and local stakeholders responsible for dams monitor them and follow best safety practices.

To learn more about dam safety and the dams in your area, visit the National Inventory of Dams: https://nid.sec.usace.army.mil/

Summer is less than a month away! Have you made your seasonal recreation plans? Whether you are a camper, paddleboarder, jogger, dog (on a leash), or anything in between, we're happy to have you! Each year, visitors come to enjoy the great outdoors at 106 recreation areas, 325 trail miles, and over 60 boat ramps spread out across Eastern Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

Amidst all the summer fun, safety is still our number one priority! Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, wearing sunscreen and following all posted signage at the parks. Give a USACE ranger a high-five if you see one! We are all responsible for taking care of our public lands and preserving them for decades of recreation to come! Be safe, have fun and don't forget those life jackets!

TBT: Jackson Hole Edition!

Built as a system of federal and non-federal levees, the Jackson project now includes more than 30 miles of levees that help shield over 10,000 residents, critical infrastructure, and nearly $1 billion in property in the Jackson Hole floodplain. From early days focused on ranchland to today’s protection of homes, businesses, and a year‑round tourism economy, this levee system has evolved alongside the community it serves.

Last weekend, Mill Creek park rangers participated in the annual Return to the River festival to celebrate the return of salmon to the Walla Walla Basin each year!

Our park rangers also use this opportunity to engage with the community on water safety and the critical mission of flood risk management.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers builds and maintains infrastructure communities rely on everyday, from flood protection to navigation systems and hydropower. The ‘Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork’ initiative helps ensure we can deliver those projects efficiently by focusing our resources on infrastructure rather than unnecessary administrative delays. For the Northwestern Division, it means we can continue delivering projects that protect communities from flooding, support navigation and commerce, and provide renewable energy while improving the efficiency of how those projects move forward.

Our “Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork” District Salary Transparency initiative, explained:

Alongside National Safe Boating Week, National Public Works Week is the perfect time to recognize the essential civil works infrastructure that powers our region!

The Lower Granite Lock and Dam is a multipurpose project stands as a premier example of how public works directly benefit our communities. By simultaneously supporting navigation, flood risk management, renewable hydropower generation, and ecosystem restoration, Lower Granite demonstrates the enduring value of robust civil engineering.

Did you know Lower Granite’s navigation lock moves nearly 1.5 million tons of cargo annually? As part of the West Coast’s furthest inland seaport system, it ensures farmers, processors, and shippers have reliable, cost-effective access to global markets.

As the weather warms up and more of us head outdoors to enjoy USACE-managed lands, we want to remind everyone to be considerate of others.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors—both two-legged and four-legged—please keep the following in mind:

- Leash your pets: Keep all pets on a leash at all times. Even the friendliest dogs can act unpredictably, and leashes prevent unwanted interactions.
- Follow the rules: Adhere to all posted park rules and guidelines. They are in place to ensure your safety and protect our natural resources.
- Respect shared spaces: Be mindful of other visitors around you. Sharing the space allows everyone to have a great time outdoors.

Let's work together to keep our lands safe and welcoming for the entire community!

National Safe Boating Week, May 16–22, marks the unofficial start of another busy recreation season on the Snake and Columbia rivers.

As the operator of the federal navigation locks that keep this 465-mile inland waterway open from Astoria, Oregon, to Lewiston, Idaho, the Walla Walla District helps move goods, support jobs, and connect communities across the Northwest. Safe, responsible boating protects that economic engine by reducing accidents, minimizing delays, and keeping emergency resources focused where they are needed most.

As you head out this season, wear your life jacket, know the conditions, and follow all posted guidance at USACE-managed facilities.

Many people drown every year trying to retrieve their boat. Using the right knot is critical to making sure your vessel is secure, so it doesn’t drift away. Remember, to always wear a life jacket when you’re retrieving anything in the water.
