FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Two Arrested Following Overnight Shooting Investigation in Walla Walla.

WALLA WALLA, Wash.- This morning, at approximately 12:15 a.m., officers with the Walla Walla Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 1500 block of W. Rose St. in Walla Walla.

Officers arrived and located a 30-year-old male victim suffering from a gunshot wound following a disturbance involving several individuals gathered in a parking lot after business hours. The victim was transported to a local hospital and later transferred out of the area for additional medical treatment.

Investigators determined the incident stemmed from a verbal confrontation that escalated into a physical altercation between the victim and 21-year-old Milton-Freewater man, Jan Eduardo Vasquez. Witness statements and video evidence indicated the altercation became physical prior to a single gunshot being fired.

As the investigation continued, officers developed information regarding Vasquez’s whereabouts. Just before 10:00 a.m. today, Walla Walla Police Department officers were able to track down Vasquez and safely take him into custody.

Investigators also worked with regional law enforcement partners in Oregon to execute a search warrant related to the case. During the search, investigators recovered evidence believed to be connected to the shooting, including a firearm and spent shell casing.

Vasquez was arrested on suspicion of Assault in the First Degree and booked into custody.

Additionally, 20-year-old Milton-Freewater woman, Linda Ruby Cuevas, was arrested on suspicion of Rendering Criminal Assistance and Making False Statements to a Public Servant after investigators determined evidence connected to the incident had been concealed and false information was initially provided to law enforcement.

Earlier today, investigators learned that the victim was in critical but stable condition.

This investigation is complex and remains active. Anyone with additional video footage or information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Walla Walla Police Department at 509-527-4434.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wanted Felony Suspect Arrested Following Extended Standoff in Walla Walla.

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — A wanted felony suspect was taken into custody Thursday afternoon following an hours-long standoff with law enforcement in the 200 block of Malcolm Street.

At approximately 3 p.m. on May 14, 2026, WWPD conducted surveillance in the area identifying 43-year-old Walla Walla man Edgar Ruben Cantu Rodriguez entering a residence. WWPD was aware Cantu Rodriguez had multiple active felony warrants including:

- Child Molestation in the 1st Degree (2 counts)
- Attempted Child Molestation
- Attempt to Elude, Reckless driving, Reckless Endangerment, Resisting and Interfering with Law Enforcement
- (DOC) for Failure to Appear for an original charge of Robbery in the 2nd Degree

Note: Cantu Rodriguez committed the alleged child molestation crimes while out on wanted status.

After Cantu Rodriguez entered the residence, officers established a perimeter and attempted to contact him using patrol vehicle public address systems. During the initial contact, Cantu Rodriguez briefly appeared at the doorway holding a handgun while yelling at officers. He retreated inside and refused to surrender.

Another male later exited the residence and was safely taken into custody on an unrelated felony warrant. The male was transported to the Walla Walla County Juvenile Justice Center.

Due to Cantu Rodriguez’s refusal to comply with commands and the fact that he was armed, the Walla Walla Regional SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene. Our SWAT team has responded to this residence at least two previous times. Negotiators remained in communication with Cantu Rodriguez for several hours in an effort to resolve the incident peacefully.

During the standoff, Cantu Rodriguez repeatedly refused commands to surrender and challenged officers to approach the residence. Cantu Rodriguez told officers multiple times they’d have to kill him. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence based on information developed during the incident.

After several hours of negotiations, officers deployed less-lethal tools and chemical agents in an effort to gain compliance. Cantu Rodriguez was ultimately taken into custody without serious injury to officers, the suspect, or community members. Cantu Rodriguez possessed suspected co***ne on his person upon arrest. He was evaluated by paramedics at the scene before being booked into the Walla Walla County Jail.

Following the arrest, detectives executed the search warrant and recovered multiple loaded fi****ms, ammunition, and firearm accessories from inside the residence. Investigators determined Cantu Rodriguez was prohibited from possessing fi****ms due to a prior felony conviction. Two loaded fi****ms were located just inside the front door of the residence.

In addition to his warrants listed above, Cantu Rodriguez was booked on probable cause for the following charges:

• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in the First Degree (two counts)
• Resisting Arrest
• Possession of a Controlled Substance
• Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer

Cantu Rodriguez has posed an ongoing threat to public safety due to his continued violent criminal behavior and lengthy efforts to evade law enforcement. Our department remains committed to protecting the community and holding offenders accountable, regardless of how long they have been avoiding arrest. The incident remains under investigation.

Sometimes the best calls are the ones where we get to give back.

WWPD recently responded to a reported bike theft involving a young man whose bicycle was taken while he was at the park. K9 Officer Goodwin met with him and helped connect him with our Crime Victim Advocates, but we didn’t stop there.

With help from our partners at Bicycle Barn, we were able to surprise Michael at school with a brand new bike, complete with a tune-up and a lock. Seeing his reaction made it all worth it.

Enjoy the ride, Michael, we’re glad to have you back on two wheels. 🚲

Why does Dispatch ask so many questions? Just send help!

We understand that answering questions during an emergency can be challenging. Rest assured that Dispatchers are extensively trained professionals who will guide you through your emergency, ensuring an accurate response and safety for all involved.

Simply shouting, “Just send help!” or “Get here now!” helps no one. We promise… we aren’t trying to annoy you, and we definitely are not delaying a response! Oftentimes responders are already starting towards the location of an emergency while the Dispatcher continues to ask clarifying questions. Trust that there is a reason behind every question the Dispatcher asks you. Growing frustrated with or refusing to answer questions costs valuable time that none of us can afford.

Even when it feels like “so many questions,” those questions are what get help to you quickly and accurately.

Depending on the nature of the call, the Dispatcher may stay on the line with you, continuing to ask questions so responders are kept updated. We know it can be hard, especially when you are experiencing an emergency. Answer the questions, and do not hang up until the Dispatcher concludes the call.

Remember: this is their job, and Dispatchers are highly trained to handle emergency calls. Trust them, trust the process. You are in good hands.

- R**e of a child 1st (20 counts)
