Please remember that storm drains flow directly to our local rivers & streams — not to a treatment plant.

After mowing, take a minute to blow grass clippings back onto your lawn instead of into the street. Grass clippings can benefit your lawn by returning nutrients to the soil, but those same clippings can harm our local waterways when washed into storm drains.

Keeping clippings out of the street is an easy way to help protect our watershed.

FYI:

ITC will be conducting aerial patrols of the high-voltage transmission structures, lines and equipment throughout Kent County from June 12-17, weather permitting.

The helicopter patrols are conducted to provide an overall status of the overhead transmission system that is operated by ITC’s Michigan operating entities, ITCTransmission and Michigan Electric Transmission Company, LLC (METC).

Crews check for damaged or worn equipment and vegetation hazards. The inspection flights are often conducted at low altitudes to allow accurate visual inspection of equipment for lightning damage, wear or other potential problems.

This is normal procedure, so there is no cause for alarm if a low-flying helicopter is sighted near transmission lines.

Last night, multiple trees around the city were uprooted or had falling limbs after the storm.

Areas of Butterworth had to be closed due to power lines being entangled in the tree debris.

Our DPW crews were out in force, clearing what debris they could to get roadways reopened. That clean up continues today.

Larger trees in higher traffic areas will take priority during cleanup. Keep that in mind as some clean up will likely last into tomorrow.

We encourage Walker residents to monitor weather conditions this evening as another round of storms is predicted.

This week, a group of Walker Firefighters & Police Officers are attending a Swift Water Rescue training on the Grand River.

Continued training will be a big part of Fire Chief Shoultz's legacy here in Walker.

As the Grand River flows through the south end of our city, he made it a priority to have our public safety personnel trained in water rescue. This week, it begins.

Another group will attend the training in July.
