John Huelsenbeck was drafted into the U.S. Army in July 1966, assigned to Battery C, 1st Battalion, 44th Artillery Regiment and sent to Vietnam. In July 1967, 20-year-old Huelsenbeck's was operating a “Duster,” an armored open turret tank with twin-mounted 40-millimeter cannons, in support of U.S. Marine operations in the Vietnam. While operating near the Demilitarized Zone in South Vietnam, Huelsenbeck’s unit was ambushed by the North Vietnamese Army.

Today is Women Veterans Recognition Day. The date is observed annually commemorating the 1948 signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, which granted women the right to serve as permanent members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Housed in a custom, expandable tractor-trailer truck, the National Purple Heart Mobile Tribute & Education Center will feature engaging displays, artifacts, and video testimonials from Purple Heart recipients from across conflicts and generations. The facility will also include a studio where Purple Heart heroes can privately record their Stories of Valor to be preserved in perpetuity. During the 2026 Purple Heart Patriot Project Mission, Honor Mission Board member and U.S. Army Nurse Corps 2nd Lt Edie Meeks shared with our honorees the story behind her service.

Meeks worked as an Army nurse at the Third Field Hospital in Saigon in the intensive care recovery unit from July 1968 to January 1969. Then, from January 1969 to July 1969, Meeks was stationed at the 71st Evacuation Hospital in Pleiku in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. After not talking about her military service for many years, Meeks has become an advocate for the recognition of women veterans. She has worked with the Vietnam Women's Memorial Foundation.

U.S. Army Sergeant Joseph Morales was in August 2010 during . Hailing from , , Sgt Morales was conducting a mounted patrol along Main Supply Route Madrid in Ash Shamiya, Iraq, as part of a Key Leader Engagement mission enroute to engage with the local Chief of Police for the city of Najaf, Iraq. While en-route, his Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle was struck by a command-detonated improvised explosive device (IED) emplaced at an Iraqi Army checkpoint.

The National Purple Heart Honor Mission was pleased to assist with Sgt Morales' enrollment into the National Purple Heart Roll of Honor.

Connie Johnson enlisted into the in June 2002, going in as a military police officer as part of the 101st Military Police, a combat MP company. Then-PFC Johnson was sent overseas, first to Kuwait and later, to Iraq.
