All-time record March heat, exceptionally low humidity, and periods of breezy winds will continue to drive critical fire weather conditions through Saturday. Today, the highest fire
danger will be localized to the Cheyenne Ridge and vicinity where winds will be strongest. Breezy winds will become expansive on Saturday coinciding with highly anomalous heat and single-digit humidity, extending into the foothills and high mountain valleys.

The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a Red Flag
Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect
from 11 AM to 10 PM MDT Saturday. The Fire Weather Watch is no
longer in effect.

* AFFECTED AREA...Fire Weather Zones 211 and 213.

* TIMING...From 11 AM to 10 PM MDT Saturday.

* WINDS...West 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 7 percent.

* IMPACTS...Conditions will be favorable for rapid fire spread.
Avoid outdoor burning and any activity that may produce a
spark and start a wildfire.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now....or will shortly. A combination of strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.”

On Tuesday, a very special honor was awarded to one of our own. Jim Rizor was presented with the ALS (Advanced Life Support), the paramedic level of care, EMS Professional of the Year award by the North East Colorado Regional EMS & Trauma Advisory Council.

Jim was born and raised in Jackson County and decided to become an EMT in the early 1980s. In the early 1990s, he became Jackson County’s first paramedic, helping shape the future of emergency medical care in our community. Serving a rural area surrounded by mountains, Jim has truly gone the distance for his patients. He has hiked up mountains, been dropped out of helicopters, ridden horseback, navigated back roads in ambulances and four wheel drives, traveled by snowmobile, and if you can think of another way to get somewhere in Jackson County, there is a good chance Jim has done it to reach someone in need.

For over 40 years, he has been serving this community with a toothpick in his mouth and a calm presence that everyone recognizes. Since the beginning of his career, he has taken care of people on their worst days with skill, compassion, and unwavering dedication. We estimate that throughout his entire career, he may have taken approximately only ten days off, which speaks volumes about his commitment to this community.

When asked what his favorite part about working with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was, he said, “Definitely being bossed around by my incredible, amazing, talented niece Kayla, who dispatches.” He may not have actually said those exact words, but she imagines that is what he would have said.

Congratulations, Jim. This recognition is well deserved, and Jackson County is better because of you. 🚑👏

Today we would like to take a moment to recognize a very HUGE milestone for Jackson County Dispatch.

All of our dispatchers have worked incredibly hard to become EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) certified. For the first time in our agency’s history, all of our full-time dispatchers are now EMD certified.

Earlier this month, Elizabeth M. put her newly learned skills to work when she took a call for an unresponsive individual requiring CPR. She calmly and confidently instructed the caller on how to perform CPR until responders arrived.

The patient has a long journey of recovery ahead, but he is here with us today. Because of Elizabeth’s quick actions, he is able to continue being here for his children. We believe that because of Elizabeth’s life-saving instructions and the caller’s calm demeanor and willingness to act, this situation had a much different outcome.

We also want to recognize that Jessie W. and Erin S. played critical roles in this call. Their teamwork and support behind the scenes allowed Elizabeth to focus fully on providing EMD instructions and guiding the caller through CPR. Calls like this are never handled by just one person, they are the result of a coordinated team effort.

This is a powerful reminder that dispatchers truly are the first first responders. We are incredibly proud of our team and the dedication, professionalism, and commitment they show to this community every single day.

📞 The First 911 Call: A Life-Saving Innovation

On February 16, 1968, history was made in Haleyville, Alabama, when the very first 911 call in the United States was placed. Before 911 existed, people had to memorize separate phone numbers for police, fire, or medical emergencies, slowing response times when every second mattered.

The first call connected Alton Bell, a local police chief, to Tommy Brooker, the telephone operator, on a specially equipped phone line. This successful test proved that a single, easy-to-remember number could connect anyone in need to emergency services quickly and efficiently.

After that, the idea caught on slowly. It was not until the 1970s and 1980s that 911 became widespread across the U.S., as telephone infrastructure and state regulations had to catch up. By the mid-1980s, over 50% of Americans had access to 911, and today it is practically universal.

Modern 911 systems continue to evolve, integrating cell phones, GPS, and enhanced 911 (E911) technology, helping responders locate callers instantly even if you do not know your exact address.

Next time you dial 911, remember it all started with a small town and a single call that changed emergency response forever.

Happening Now: Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 6:42 p.m. - Per the Colorado Department of Transportation - Highway 40 is closed in both directions between Kemry Lane and County Road 186 (3 to 22 miles east of Steamboat Springs) from Mile Point 139 to Mile Point 157. Road closed expect delays due to a crash.
