Stop the Spark!

Rechargeable and lithium batteries can cause fires at recycling centers and landfills. Please do not put them in your garbage or recycling totes. These batteries are often found inside electronics such as laptops and cell phones.

Scott County residents can recycle batteries and battery-containing electronics for free at the Electronics Recovery Center on Carey Avenue. Drop-off boxes for battery recycling are available at their Carey Avenue, Scott County Park, and West Lake Park recycling drop-offs. One of the members of our Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) was recently appointed to the Planning & Zoning Commission, creating a vacancy on ZBA.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body authorized by the State of Iowa and the Walcott City Code to interpret and give exceptions to the zoning code. Such exceptions include variances and special use permits.

The vacant position will be filled by appointment by the City Council. The appointee will serve the unexpired term ending December 31, 2027. Meetings are infrequent and are scheduled by the Zoning Administrator following receipt of an appropriate application and are typically held on either the 2nd or 4th Monday of the month.

To be considered for an appointment, applicants must be a resident of the City of Walcott and at least 18 years of age. Submit a completed application to Walcott City Hall or email to [email protected] no later than 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026. Applications are available at www.cityofwalcott.com or at Walcott City Hall.

Applications are subject to the Iowa open record laws. Appointees will be required to complete an open meetings and open records training.
