🎆 The Annual Firecracker Fundraiser Has Begun! 🎆

With the assistance of the Wakefield Fire Department, members of the Wakefield Fireworks Committee will be going door-to-door throughout the community selling 50/50 raffle tickets and accepting donations to support the region’s premier July 3rd fireworks display.

Over the next few hours, you may hear sirens, the occasional air horn, or other attention-getting noises as volunteers make their way through the neighborhoods. Please don’t be alarmed, there is no emergency. Members of the Wakefield Fireworks Committee are simply trying to get your attention as they work to raise funds for this longstanding community tradition.

As our nation celebrates its 250th birthday, the Committee hopes to make this year’s display bigger and better than ever. With your support, we can help create a fireworks show worthy of this historic milestone and make Wakefield’s July 3rd celebration truly unforgettable.

Thank you for supporting the Wakefield Fireworks Committee and helping make this year’s display one for the history books!

⚠️ WEATHER UPDATE – CITY OF WAKEFIELD ⚠️

The City of Wakefield is closely monitoring weather forecasts as enhanced thunderstorms are expected to move into the area later this afternoon and continue through the evening hours.

At this time, the primary concern is the potential for damaging winds. Strong thunderstorms may also produce large hail, frequent lightning, heavy rainfall, and isolated power outages.

🌮 WATCH vs. WARNING – The Taco Test 🌮

A Severe Thunderstorm WATCH means the ingredients are in your kitchen to make tacos. The conditions are there, but dinner hasn’t happened yet.

A Severe Thunderstorm WARNING means the tacos are on your plate and it’s time to eat. The storm is occurring or imminent and action should be taken immediately.

⛈️ STORM SAFETY TIPS

• Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, and other loose items.
• Charge cell phones and electronic devices before storms arrive.
• Move indoors when thunder is heard.
• Stay away from windows during severe storms.
• Avoid using corded electrical devices during lightning activity.
• Have flashlights readily available in case of power outages.

⚡ DOWNED POWER LINES

If you encounter a downed power line:

• Stay far away from it.
• Assume every downed wire is energized and dangerous.
• Do not drive over downed lines.
• Keep children and pets away from the area.
• Report the location immediately to emergency authorities.

📞 REPORTING EMERGENCIES

For power outages, storm damage creating an immediate hazard, blocked roadways, or other urgent storm-related matters, contact the Gogebic County Sheriff's Office (906) 667-0203.

For any emergency requiring immediate assistance, call 911.

The City will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary. Please remain weather aware this evening and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

This Memorial Day, the City of Wakefield honors and remembers the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation, while also recognizing all veterans, past and present, for their sacrifice and dedication.

Today, we encourage residents and visitors to take a drive or walk along the City’s Living Memorial stretching nearly a mile and a half down Sunday Lake Street and around beautiful Sunday Lake. The memorial proudly displays banners recognizing local veterans and their service to our country.

As you travel the route, we encourage you to look for the two Gold Star banners, a special designation honoring those who were killed in action in defense of our nation.

On this beautiful Memorial Day, may we all take a moment to reflect, remember, and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
