Did you know that Wakefield residents ages 60 and over could qualify for an exemption of $750 (less Medicare tax) on their real estate tax bills through the Senior Tax Work-Off Program? The exemption is granted to residents in exchange for 50 hours of service to the Town. Applications are coming due and will be accepted through June 22.

Eligible applicants must be the owner of the property, have owned it for at least five years, lived in Massachusetts for at least ten years, and the property must be the applicant’s primary residence.

Applications and program information are available online at www.wakefieldma.gov/tax-work-off and applications are also available at the Senior Center, located at 30 Converse Street.

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, a time dedicated to honoring the seniors in our community and ensuring they have the tools to live safely and securely. In recognition of this important month, the Wakefield Alliance Against Violence (WAAV) invites you to a special community Lunch & Learn right here at the McCarthy Senior Center.

Protecting yourself starts with staying informed. This session is designed to provide practical, actionable advice on navigating the modern world safely—from the mail you receive to the devices you use every day.

The following speakers will be here to discuss topics from protecting yourself from scams to keeping your passwords safe and secure:
- Cheryl Cannon from The Saving Bank
- McKayla Lever from Mystic Valley Elder Services
- Amy Rando and Chief Skory from Wakefield Police Department

Sweet Treats & Chocolate Feats: Cooking Class
Wednesday, June 10th at 1:00pm

Indulge your sweet tooth and sharpen your culinary skills! Chef JD and Ronnie will be leading a decadent afternoon dedicated to everyone’s favorite treat: Chocolate.
In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the secrets to crafting two timeless desserts:
- Velvety Chocolate Truffles: Master the art of making a smooth ganache and rolling your own gourmet truffles.
- Chocolate Covered Strawberries: Learn the professional techniques for tempering chocolate and achieving that perfect, elegant drizzle.

This class is sure to be a "sweet" success. Of course, the best part is the taste-testing!

$10 per person.
Sign-ups begin in-person on Monday, June 1st 9:30am. Payment required upon sign up. Space is limited, a select number of seats are reserved for Wakefield residents.

Attention adults with diabetes - you may be eligible to receive a pair of diabetic shoes and inserts covered by your insurance! Many insurances cover this completely. Amy Baxter from National Diabetes Care will be at the Center on Wednesday, July 22 to do shoe fittings.

Celebrate the World Cup 2026 at the Center! We have three exciting events coming up this month in honor of the World Cup 2026!

1. Join Our World Cup Prediction Pool by 6/10
We are hosting a World Cup Pool, and we want to see who can predict the winning teams! Stop by the Front Office to fill out your bracket and enter your guesses by 6/10. Not only will you have bragging rights, but you’ll also be entered for a chance to win a special prize at the end of the tournament. No soccer expertise required—just come join the fun!

2. Chair Soccer Tournament: Tuesday, June 16th at 1:00pm
In honor of the 2026 World Cup—and with the excitement of matches happening right down the road in Foxborough—we are hosting our very own Chair Soccer Tournament! No cleats or running required! Join us in the Exercise Room as we split into teams for a fun, high-energy game of indoor soccer. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just looking for some afternoon laughs and movement, all skill levels are welcome. Wear your favorite team colors (or just some comfortable sneakers) and come ready to compete! Registration required by 6/12, call 781-245-3312 to sign up.

3. Watch a Game at the Center! Tuesday, June 23rd at 1:00pm
Join us in the Lounge on the second floor to watch Portugal vs Uzbekistan at the Houston Stadium at 1:00pm on Tuesday, June 23rd. No sign-up required.

Back by popular demand! Join us for a seaside escape to historic Castle Island. Enjoy stunning harbor views, fresh ocean air, and lunch at the legendary Sullivan’s. Since 1951, Sullivan’s has served up classic New England favorites, from their famous hot dogs to fresh seafood rolls. Don't miss out on this perfect blend of history and summer flavor! Depart from Senior Center at 10:30am, Return to Senior Center around 2:30pm. Lunch at Sullivan’s at participants expense,

Enjoy a 1 hour guided tour at the historic Steven Coolidge House and enjoy the beautiful gardens. We will then head to Grassfield’s Restaurant for a delicious lunch. Depart from Senior Center at 10:30am, Return to Senior Center around 2:30pm. $25 tour and transportation fee paid upon registration. Lunch at participants own expense.
