Most of us don't think about the electric grid until we need it, but reliable infrastructure quietly powers our everyday lives. Behind every flipped light switch is a network of high-voltage transmission and lower-voltage distribution lines, substations, and equipment working around the clock to move electricity where it's needed.

The high-voltage transmission network plays a critical role in the electric grid. Transmission lines move electricity from power plants to local substations, where local cooperatives like Western deliver it to homes and businesses.

What is step potential?
Why every step matters near a downed power line

When a downed power line touches the ground, electricity can spread out like ripples on a pond.

If your feet touch two different voltage levels, electricity can move through your body.

That is step potential, and it can be deadly.

If you see a downed power line
STOP. Keep yourself and others at least 50 feet away.
CALL 911. Report it and wait for help.
Never touch the line or anything it touches, including fences, vehicles, trees, equipment, or people.
If you are near a downed line, do not walk or run away
Shuffle to safety. Keep feet close together and on the ground.
Hop away. Keep feet together and hop and land together.
Downed lines can be silent, still, and deadly. Stay away and call 911.

Western Cooperative Electric has completed a systemwide pole identification project designed to improve outage response, maintenance efficiency and member communication across the cooperative’s service territory.

Every pole on Western’s electrical system now features a unique identification number that directly corresponds with the cooperative’s mapping and operational systems. The multi-year project serves as another tool to help Western respond to outages and service issues more quickly and accurately.

When members report an outage, damaged equipment or another concern, providing the nearest pole identification number can help crews pinpoint the exact location faster — especially in rural areas where addresses or landmarks may be difficult to identify. Because every pole is mapped within Western’s system,the identification numbers allow dispatchers and crews to locate issues with greater precision, helping reduce response time and improve service restoration efforts.

“Having an accurate pole identification system helps us locate outages and respond more efficiently across our entire territory,” said Western Cooperative Electric Staker Jeff Mattheyer. “In many rural areas, a pole number can be the fastest and most accurate way for our crews to identify a location and restore power safely.”

Safety remains the top priority when reporting outages or damaged equipment. Western reminds members to never approach a downed power pole, low-hanging line or any electrical equipment that appears unsafe. If a pole is damaged or power lines are touching the ground, members should stay far away and instead provide the safest pole number nearest the affected area.

The pole identification numbers are typically displayed on tags attached to the pole and can be extremely helpful during emergencies, storm restoration or even routine service questions.

Western encourages members to become more familiar with the new dentification system and just be aware of nearby pole numbers around their homes, farms or businesses. Knowing where and what the numbers are can make a significant difference during an emergency situation.

This completed project reflects Western’s ongoing commitment to improving reliability, safety and service for cooperative members across western Kansas.

BE AWARE OF ELECTRICAL HAZARDS AROUND THE FARM FARM MACHINERY CONTINUES TO GET BIGGER, CREATING A DANGEROUS “DANCE” AROUND POWER LINES. AVOID DEADLY AND COSTLY COLLISIONS WITH OVERHEAD LINES. CHANGE IT CHANGE IT REROUTE OR RE-ADJUST REROUTE OR RE-ADJUST  BEFORE YOU UNFOLD any spray rigs or open any augers, take note of your equipment location to any nearby power lines. Move away from power lines if necessary.  ALWAYS USE A SPOTTER who has a broad vantage point when working near power lines.  NEVER RAISE EQUIPMENT such as ladders, poles or rods near power lines. Materials such as lumber, tree limbs, tires and hay will conduct electricity, depending on dampness and dust and dirt contamination.  ALWAYS LOWER EQUIPMENT extensions, portable augers, or elevators to their lowest possible level, under 14 feet, before moving or transporting them. Wind, uneven ground, shifting weight, or other conditions can cause you to lose control of equipment and make contact with power lines.  NEVER ATTEMPT TO RAISE or move a power line to clear a path. If power lines near your property have sagged over time, call your utility to repair them.  IF YOU ARE IN A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT that contacts a power line, do not exit the equipment. When you step o the equipment, you become the electricity’s path to ground and could receive a potentially fatal shock. Wait until utility workers have de-energized the line and confirmed it is safe for you to exit the vehicle.  IF THE VEHICLE IS ON FIRE and you must exit, jump clear of the vehicle with both feet together. Hop as far from the vehicle as you can with your feet together.

Our Board of Trustees is in the process of taking the show on the road!

We spent today and will spend tomorrow in Ellsworth for our August Board meeting and retreat — a great opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, connect as a team, learn from incredible partners, and focus on the work ahead.

A huge thank-you to Sunflower Electric Power Corporation for partnering with us through insightful presentations and training. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn more and continue building our strong relationship as a member!

We also had the chance to tour MAICO, and wow — what an incredible Kansas business doing amazing things for our state and beyond. It was inspiring to see their operation firsthand and learn more about the people and innovation behind their work.

Good conversations, great partnerships, and a little road trip to our outpost town — not a bad way to spend a board retreat!

Looking forward to another productive day tomorrow!
