It’s been nearly 1,000 days since the last state budget was passed in North Carolina, and the Republican majority in the General Assembly has spent those 1,000 days prioritizing their political agenda over the most basic duties of state government.

Senator Sophia Chitlik, along with other Senate Democrats, spoke against Senate Republicans’ proposed amendment to the NC Constitution that essentially guarantees that future lawmakers can never make millionaires and billionaires in our state pay their fair share in taxes. Instead of joining Sen. Chitlik in standing up for NC’s working families, Republicans tried to shut her up.

During today’s session, Senate Republicans voted to advance a constitutional amendment that caps the personal income tax rate at 3.5% for everyone, including the ultra-rich. They’re marketing it as “Lower Taxes For All,” but in reality, it doesn’t actually lower taxes for working families— personal income tax is already scheduled to drop to 3.49% next year. Their amendment just prevents future lawmakers from increasing taxes on the wealthiest in our state.

In response, Senator Grafstein introduced a proposal to completely eliminate the personal income tax for anyone making below the median income level, which is $58,000 a year. This legislation would provide much-needed relief for half of our state, but Republicans rejected it.

While Republicans protect the wealthy few under the guise of “lowering your taxes,” Senate Democrats are fighting every day for real relief for you and your family.
