For nearly a decade, the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association has assisted local students through scholarships and training programs. This year, a total of $54,343 in workforce training programs and visitor industry scholarships have been awarded to Maui-based students.

Workforce training programs included a learning-trip to New York for students enrolled in Baldwin High’s Academy of Hospitality & Tourism classes, ClimbHi Service Excellence Certificates for 17 students on Molokaʻi, and UH Maui Foundation’s study abroad programs.

Annual scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in several visitor industry programs: the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism (AOHT) Programs at local high schools, UH Maui College Hospitality & Tourism and Culinary Arts Programs, and the MHLA Family Member Program.

Two students benefitted from the AOHT Scholarship Program, each receiving a $2,000 scholarship, and were recognized for academic excellence as they pursue career paths within the visitor industry.

Nine students enrolled in the UH Maui College Hospitality & Tourism and Culinary Arts Programs received a $2,000 scholarship. Public recognition of these exceptional performances will take place during the Legacy Breakfast at the Maui Ag Fest on May 30.

Throughout the month of May, 21 students were presented scholarships valued at $500 to $3,500 from MHLA’s Member Scholarship Program. These scholarships are awarded to families of MHLA members based on a matrix of application answers, personal statements, resumes, letters of recommendation, academics, and extra-curricular activities.

MHLA applauds the following members for their generous donations that make these scholarships possible: Kaanapali Ocean Resort Foundation and Enterprise Rent-a-Car and MHLA’s sponsors of the annual “Excellence in Education Golf Tournament.”

2026 Memorial Day Tribute to Honor Maui Nui’s Fallen Heroes: Community Invited to Attend Public Memorial Observance at Maui Veterans Cemetery

MAKAWAO, Hawaiʻi — The Maui County Veterans Council invites the community to attend the 2026 Memorial Day Tribute on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. at Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao.

This year’s observance will honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States and our community. Veterans, military representatives, community organizations, families, and residents from across Maui Nui are encouraged to attend as the community comes together in remembrance, gratitude, and unity. The tribute is open to the public.

The ceremony will include moments of remembrance, ceremonial honors, wreath and floral tributes, and participation from members of the veteran and military community. Organizations wishing to participate in the wreath or floral tribute presentation are encouraged to indicate their organization name during RSVP registration.

“This observance is an opportunity for our community to pause together in honor of those who gave everything in service to our nation,” said Chelsea Fernandez, President of the Maui County Veterans Council. “We invite the community to join us in remembering our fallen heroes and supporting the families, veterans, and generations connected to their legacy.”

Community members are encouraged to RSVP in advance to assist organizers with seating and event coordination. For more information about the event, participation opportunities, or general inquiries, please contact the Maui County Veterans Council at [email protected] or call 808.359.1616.

In conjunction with events held on Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, and Hawaiʻi Island, the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association marked 47 years of community giving with its annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk on Saturday, May 9.

Donations came from individuals and service providers from all sectors of the visitor industry, local businesses, and Maui community members offering both monetary and non-monetary support.

Preliminary results from this year’s Charity Walk show an impressive total of $1.62 million raised in Maui County to directly benefit more than 74 Maui County nonprofit organizations. This “day-of” total broke last year’s record, however, funding is still being accepted until May 31. The final tally for this year’s event will be available Aug. 7 at the awards ceremony to be held at Fairmont Kea Lani.

A performance by Maui Taiko and Zumba from Maui’s Keoni Manuel warmed up the crowd. Following remarks from Mayor Richard Bissen, nearly 2,000 individuals demonstrated their support for local nonprofits by taking part in the 2.5-mile walk, surpassing previous year’s attendance counts. Participants in this year’s Charity Walk included visitor industry employees, nonprofit agencies, business leaders, and even some island visitors. Council Members Yuki Lei Sugimura, Tom Cook, and Kauanoe Batangan were also in attendance. Volunteer course marshals ensured a safe and organized route, while Aid Station Sponsors provided cheers, water and goodies.

After the walk, participants enjoyed a complimentary breakfast, treats, giveaways, and local entertainment, including a performance by Hammah House Band.

Proceeds from these fun events benefit the Charity Walk, and all money raised stays in Maui County. Top fundraising honors were awarded across multiple categories. The Grand Wailea took top honors for hotel properties with $52,272 raised. VIP Foodservice led the business category with $33.047, and winning the award in the non-profit category was the Hale Kau Kau team, which collected $217,469.
