One of the very first documented observances of Memorial Day was organized by formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 1, 1865.

These newly freed individuals wanted to honor the 257 Union soldiers who died as prisoners of war at a Confederate prison camp.

This profound event in South Carolina is recognized by historians as one of the most foundational roots of our modern Memorial Day.
