YOU ARE WELCOME AT OUR GREEN ISLAND
At the north edge of Wadena (MN) is property which has been a part of our family for 90 years. Now this land has a new purpose, one that we’d like to share with you, as well. This place, which once supported a family from the cows and grains raised here, is now GREEN ISLAND - an unconventional year round attraction in Wadena. Here you will find a reforested gre
en space where you are welcome to stroll walking trails that meander through 30 acres of young pines and fruit trees, picnic with family and friends while taking in an occasional sculpture or garden on the property, or even meditate in our kuti,
We’re located about a 1/2 mile north of the intersection of Hwy 71 and Hwy 10 in Wadena, on the east side of the road, sandwiched between Azure Eye Clinic and Kal's. Look for the Green Island sign on the east side of the road and drive directly into the driveway. It looks like a private residence (which it is!) however, we welcome visitors to share this oasis with us. We invite you to come at your leisure, no advance call or reservation is needed. Please feel free to bring guests, and to share the news of GREEN ISLAND with others who may have a love of nature and art. We are happy to take your call or email, if you have questions, and look forward to seeing you at GREEN ISLAND soon. Kent Scheer and Vicki Chepulis
GREEN ISLAND, 850 Scheer Drive NE, Wadena, MN 56482
WHY THE NAME GREEN ISLAND? In 2008 this property was incorporated as Green Island. The name was chosen because this land is nearly surrounded by commercial development and it functions as an insular green space, an “island” preserved from encroachment, providing rich habitat for small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Further, it rests on a sea of shallow groundwater, one of the largest aquifers in the country, in essence it is an island that is above the water. It was also dubbed Green Island in homage to a colorful meditative community of mystics and laymen that was founded on a small island in the Rhine River, near Strasbourg, Germany, in 1375—and also called Green Island. That Green Island was considered to be a house of refuge for honorable and well inclined men, who desired to retire from the world and amend their lives. Green Island is a refuge for both creatures and seekers. We hope that your visit here enhances your day.
