A CHIEF’S CHALLENGE: PROTECTING, SERVING & GIVING BACK

Today, I had the privilege of leading the La Vega ISD Police Department in volunteering at the newly opened Central Texas Food Bank in Waco.

As a group of six, we spent approximately 2½ hours stocking shelves and serving our community. It was a simple act of service, but the impact behind that work is anything but simple.

As police officers and school safety professionals, we spend our days protecting our campuses, supporting our students, and helping create safe learning environments. But today reminded us that our responsibility goes beyond the schoolhouse.

The work we did at the food bank will help provide meals for families throughout Central Texas—and some of those families may include the very students we see and serve every day.

Sometimes, serving our community means putting on a uniform and responding to a call. Other times, it means putting on a volunteer shirt, rolling up our sleeves, and helping stock a shelf.

Both are service. Both matter.

I am proud of the men and women of the La Vega ISD Police Department who gave their time today. This was a wonderful experience, and I can tell you right now—we will be doing it again, both as a department and individually.

NOW, I WANT TO ISSUE A CHALLENGE.

To every ISD Police Department across Texas:

Get your team together. Register your department. Volunteer at the Central Texas Food Bank or your local food bank. Give 2, 3, or even 4 hours of your time.

You may never know whose life you are touching, whose family you are helping, or whose child may benefit from the work you do.

Our mission is not only to protect and serve.

It is to serve wherever we are needed.

A MESSAGE FROM CHIEF KERRY L. BLAKEMORE

2026–2027: One Team. One Mission. Student Safety.

This week, the La Vega ISD Police Department proudly conducted our first-ever District Safety Conference as we prepare to begin the 2026–2027 school year.

This conference represents more than training. It represents our commitment to being prepared, proactive, and united in our responsibility to protect our students, staff, and schools.

Our profession demands that we never become comfortable with the status quo. We must continue to learn, train, evaluate, and improve. The safety of our students cannot be left to chance.

Our conference focused on critical areas that directly impact school safety:

🔹 Behavioral Threat Assessment — Instructor: Mrs. Angie Ward
🔹 Active Shooter / Active Attack Response — Instructor: Assistant Chief Andrew Turner
🔹 Human/Sex Trafficking Awareness — Instructor: Officer McGlothlin
🔹 Stop the Bleed — Instructor: Sgt. Zobava, Lieutenant Rowell and Officer Salas 

I am extremely proud of the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by our instructors, police officers, safety agents, administrators, and everyone who participated.

My Vision for 2026–2027

Our goal this school year is simple:

BE READY. BE VISIBLE. BE PROACTIVE.

We will continue strengthening relationships between our Police Department, Safety Agents, administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community partners.

We will continue preparing for the threats we hope never happen.

We will continue training for the emergencies we pray never occur.

And when challenges arise, we will be ready to respond.

School safety is not the responsibility of one person, one department, or one campus. It takes all of us working together.

As we enter the 2026–2027 school year, I want every student, parent, teacher, and staff member to know that the La Vega ISD Police Department takes this responsibility seriously.

We will be present. We will be prepared. We will be accountable. And we will continue to improve.

To the men and women of the La Vega ISD Police Department and our Safety Agent team: thank you for answering the call and for making student safety your mission.

This is just the beginning.
