Today, Sheriff McNamara proudly swore in four new deputies to the McLennan County Sheriff's Office. This milestone marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and commitment to serving our community.

Deputy Riojas, Deputy Montgomery, Deputy Long, and Deputy Kirk began their careers within our Jail Division, where they demonstrated professionalism, perseverance, and a desire to continue serving at an even greater capacity. After applying for and successfully completing the Basic Peace Officer Academy, each deputy passed the Texas Peace Officer Licensing Exam and officially took the oath to serve and protect the citizens of McLennan County.

We are incredibly proud of these deputies and the determination they have shown throughout their journey. Their commitment to excellence reflects the values and traditions of the McLennan County Sheriff's Office, and we look forward to seeing them wear the badge with honor and integrity for years to come.

As part of their continued preparation for patrol duties, the deputies also successfully completed their rifle and pistol certification this week. Our Training Division works tirelessly to provide comprehensive in-house training that meets and exceeds all requirements set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), ensuring our deputies are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to serve our community at the highest level.

Please join Sheriff McNamara, Chief Deputy Burson, and the entire McLennan County Sheriff's Office in congratulating Deputy Riojas, Deputy Montgomery, Deputy Long, and Deputy Kirk on this outstanding achievement and welcoming them to a long line of dedicated deputies who have proudly served McLennan County.
👏 Congratulations, Deputies! We are honored to have you representing the citizens of McLennan County.

📜 McLennan County Sheriff's Office History Spotlight 📜

Did you know?

Robert S. Hulme was elected as the first Sheriff of McLennan County on August 5, 1850, when the county was officially organized. He served until 1852 and helped lay the foundation for law enforcement in a county that was still very much a frontier.

Before becoming McLennan County's first Sheriff, Hulme served as a Texas Ranger in 1837 during the early days of the Republic of Texas. He was among the Rangers who occupied and helped establish Fort Fisher, a frontier outpost built along the Brazos River to help protect settlers in what would later become the Waco area. Fort Fisher is recognized as the first significant law enforcement and military presence in the region and would eventually become the site of the renowned Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum.

In fact, records from the very first meeting of the McLennan County Commissioners Court on September 2, 1850, list "Robt. Hulme, Sheriff" among the county's original officials, cementing his place in our county's history.

As we look back on more than 175 years of legacy, we honor Sheriff Hulme and the pioneers who helped establish law and order in McLennan County. Their dedication and courage helped shape the Sheriff's Office we proudly serve today.

⭐🤠🚔 Getting to Know the SO 🚔🤠⭐

Each week, we'll highlight a member of our team from various divisions and backgrounds, giving you an opportunity to learn more about the people behind the badge and those who support our mission. Join us as we get to know the outstanding employees who make MCSO a great place to serve and protect.

This week we are getting to know Deputy Jack Campbell, Field Deputy assigned to Patrol and who also serves with the Marine Enforcement Division. Jack has won Deputy of the Year at our awards Gala twice which speaks volumes to what his peers think of him. Deputy Campbell has been with MCSO for 26 years.

What inspired you to pursue a career in law enforcement, corrections, or public service?
I was inspired by several family members who served in law enforcement, including my cousin, Deputy Linda Crook, who retired from the Sheriff's Office. Another major influence was my Sunday School teacher, Waco Police Detective Bill Sanders. Their dedication to serving others motivated me to pursue a career in public service.

What do you enjoy most about your job and serving the citizens of McLennan County?
What I enjoy most is helping people and being there when my community needs assistance. Serving the citizens of McLennan County and making a positive difference in their lives is one of the most rewarding parts of this profession.

What advice would you give someone interested in joining the McLennan County Sheriff's Office?
Learn how to communicate with people and don't be afraid to start conversations. Building rapport and trust with the citizens you serve is essential. During my time working in the Jail and Courthouse, I encountered people during both the best and most difficult times of their lives, which strengthened my communication skills and helped me become a better deputy.

What do you enjoy doing when you're off duty?
Most importantly I love spending time with my family. I enjoy hunting and fishing whenever I can. One of the things I am most passionate about is volunteering with Cast for Kids, which gives me the opportunity to take special needs children fishing on my boat and create lasting memories with them and their families.

What does being part of the MCSO family mean to you?
Being part of the MCSO family means having a second home and being surrounded by people who support one another both professionally and personally. It is an extension of my family, and I am grateful to be part of such a dedicated group of individuals.

One thing that sets MCSO apart is our ability to provide high-quality, in-house training programs right here at the Sheriff’s Office.
