We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 12, District 5 South Region for their hospitality yesterday.

Flotilla members from 12-1 (Salisbury), 12-2 (Painter), and 12-5 (Ocean City) invited members from Coast Guard Stations Cape Charles and Wachapreague for their summer picnic in which Auxiliary and Active Duty members were able to relax, enjoy camaraderie, and have some great food!

Station Wachapreague showed out with its 29 foot Response Boat and 27 foot Special Purpose Craft - Shallow Water.

The Division brought burgers, dogs, chicken, sides, desserts, games, and more!

What a great day! Congratulations to 5 new Auxiliary crew members and 1 new coxswain!

We are impressed and proud to stand alongside you in performance of duties!

September 11th, 2001

A date we should all know.

Many of us can close our eyes and relive the moments when we learned of the events that ultimately unfolded that day.

For some though, 9/11 is an event learned in school or events witnessed on social media.

This year, early in the morning, we began our day watching a short video:

https://youtu.be/18lsxFcDrjo?si=wPdRR7Hfm4jd93QT

If you have not seen it, please watch. The video, narrated by Tom Hanks, is compelling! It is a reminder of the American resilience and the critical role the United States Coast Guard and maritime community played in that unforgettable day.

Next, all hands from the unit stepped off from Station Wachapreague for “Walk Wachapreague in Remembrance” event. A phone was set with an alarm for significant events. Throughout the walk as each alarm sounded the event and its significance would be discussed and the crew would perform a minimum 22 repetitions of the randomly chosen exercise!

Why 22?

Great question! Statistics show 22 veterans lose their battle to su***de each day. Therefore, in remembrance of the veterans, first responders, and the countless persons affected that day we chose to complete no less than 22 repetitions of each motivational movement!

We ended up walking nearly 2 hours through our community and tried to engage with as many people we could that were outside or driving past.

Upon return to the unit the crew huddled up and observed a moment of silence.

Lastly, the crew was presented with a challenge. Take John F. Kennedy’s famous quote: “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country,” and apply it broadly to country, Coast Guard, and unit!!!

Thank you to the men and women of Station Wachapreague and the community for their engagement!

Good afternoon Station Wachapreague followers!

Just wanted to highlight activity over the last week, minus 9/11 which will have its own post!

Your Coast Guard Station Wachapreague crew has been busy!

From battling high tides to training with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, conducting unit training, to traveling to support a unit member who graduated from Training Center Yorktown, this crew has been getting after it!

Please see the below pictures and have a great evening!

Good afternoon from the men and women of Coast Guard Station Wachapreague!!!

Ever wonder to yourself “What does Station Wachapreague do when they aren’t acting as America’s guardians???”

Let me give you a little insight!

Today the crew invested in the unit and community by taking advantage of the cooler weather completing some general curb appeal! The goal was simple - own your area, show pride, and give members and the community something to be proud of.

Station Wachapreague has been here much longer than any of us and we respect its legacy, the residents, and visitors to the community!

Afterwards, Station command members cooked up some burgers and dogs to say thanks for all the hard work.

Break Break:

Some big news coming, and your feedback would be greatly appreciated (leave comments)…

Which schools can we get involved with? Do you think hosting a “day in the life of a coastie” could be popular? Showing the youth the small boats and equipment, hosting them at the unit, showcasing gear and missions?

Put a local school, church, or summer program in your comments and we’ll do the rest!!!

Would you be interested if we came together at Island House, for example, to give you an opportunity to meet the crew?

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages! Sorry we have not posted in a while but the unit went through a change of command and was then supporting Coast Guard Station Chincoteague in its efforts with the 100th Anniversary Pony Swim over the last 2 weeks!

I did tactfully acquire, aka borrow, a few of these pictures from Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Chincoteague (thanks Chief Merritt)!

More to come this week, make sure if you’re a local here in Wachapreague you watch for posts. Exciting news to follow!

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Today we said “see ya later” to two of our shipmates.

Our Engineer Petty Officer, MK1 Clawson, is leaving us after 3 years of dedicated duty in Wachapreague. He is heading to be the Engineer Petty Officer of CGC HAWSER, a 65’ harbor tug.

BM3 Bartz has served for 2 years in Wachapreague and made the decision to separate from service and pursue opportunities in the civilian sector.

We wish them both the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Fair winds and following seas, you will be missed!

Please join us in congratulating BM3 Colon on her recent graduation from BM RAP school at U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown!

The Boatswatins Mate Rating Apprentice Program (BM RAP) is a relatively new program in which members who have achieved a boat crew certification in the fleet can attend an abbreviated, 6 week school that builds on their boat crew knowledge to transform them in to Boatswains Mates.

BM3 Colon reported to the unit in April and will remain in Wachapreague for her first tour as a Petty Officer. We look forward to watching her grow and achieve great things during her time in Wachapreague. BZ shipmate!

Special thanks to U.S. Coast Guard Sector Virginia Commander, Captain Britton, on joining us for the special occasion!
